i have a 2 month old veiled chameleon and i took him outside to his outdoor cage today for the first time and he turned a very dark black but he was laying on the top branch on the hottest part of the cage
he wasnt cold because its almost 90 degrees in his basking spot and i dont think hes stressed , he lookd happy
is he just soaking up the sun?

Yes, they turn dark to bask. The darker colors absorb more heat/uvb.
90F is probably too hot for a cham that young, but I have no veiled experience.
Good for you letting him have some sun though...

Yes.
as it was his first time out, he probably freaked a bit and turned dark.
my veiled did the same thing.
a fwe minutes outside at that tmep wont kill him. just make sure he gets misted and has shady spots to get to if he gets hot.

My veileds will turn black, but usually when freaked and not other times. Moving them is one of the things that will freak them (mine at least). I see it most often when I put a female in w/ a male to see if she is receptive. Black with turquoise spots is a very clear signal for me to put her right back in her cage.
