Baytri, other meds availability sans vet

Lucifer, my Jackson's, has developed a pustule on his eye. He may have picked it up when we evacuated to Florida for Ike (it was stressful for all of us!). I noticed that he had trouble targeting crickets and so we were feeding him waxworms with Repti-Aid supplements. The other day, I noticed a pustule on his eye. A scan of the web revealed this as somewhat common and needing a visit to the vet for Baytril and possible lancing. Here is where things go south.

I was told that a local vet was skilled with reptiles and "exotics", so I made an appointment. The first clue that the clinic was questionable was the shock that some of the staff had to the name of my baby. Well, he is called Lucifer because he has horns, not because he is the spawn of the devil or something. I get a bit nervous around the "God Squad" when it has to do with medicine--I for myself or the ones I hold dear. It is just too easy to say, "Oh, we are so sorry we lost him, but it was the lords will and he's in heaven now."

Then the tech wanted to take pictures for her "exotics scrapbook" while I waited to see the vet, as if Lucifer wasn't stressed enough already! This was my second clue. I then learned that they had a chameleon with an eye problem the week before--that gave me an uneasy confidence.

When the vet came in I said, "I understand you had a chameleon with an eye problem last week." "Yes, but it was different than yours," meaning, no horns. Then I asked, "Was it a calyptratus?" and he replied, "No, I think it was called a veiled chameleon." Well, that was clue three that I wasn't amongst chameleon experts. He did say that we should try an antibiotic, so he prescribed Baytril. $66 bucks later I was out the door with the little bottle and a mini-syringe.

Ok, where do you get the drugs w/o the vet? I could have done this myself. I had a bit of hope with Tractor Supply, which sells OTC equine, bovine and avian antibiotics--but i didn't see Baytril or any of it's variants. I can get Viagra over the net, why not Baytril?

Excuse the rant.

I don't know where you can get antibiotics without a prescription...but I don't recommend it...I recommend finding an exotics vet who knows what he/she is doing.

If you don't get a test done you won't know whether the pustule is caused by a bacteria, virus, fungus or something else. If you don't get a culture and sensitivity test done you won't know what antibiotic will kill it.

Thanks. I found what I needed.
