Without a uv meter, recommend distance for the basing branch would be 10-12 inch’s?

spent a lot on an DS but it is on my todo list.

Vail prob 6 inch’s in length. Cage gets here tomorrow and prob take me a week to set up
I have one too! This is hank and he is super pretty mad lol... just be cautious because of their casque is slightly higher while basking ....
I often catch mine with his mouth slightly open because he’s thermal regulating, and that’s at about 11 inches from his basking spot ...

This is from @Beman ... I use 60 watt regular incandescent bulbs and I have a full 10 inch drop to basking. This ensures that I do not have a thermal burn risk. If your using one of the focused heat basking bulbs they can be quite intense the closer you are to them.

I had to go 13"—with a 6% (5.0)—through the screen top—with a Solarmeter.
Just saying I don't put much credence in rules of thumb anymore.

IDK if test cards would be a suitable stop gap; providing plenty of range of distance between UV-B & basking perch (and shade) would at least allow the cham to decide where s/he wants to be.

Meter is still the best way.

This is what I have for heat bulb hun not uvb.

i use aRepi t5 HO 10.0 linear single 22 inch with refletor
Ok so personally I would reduce to a 5.0 or 6% bulb.... 10.0 is much stronger then really should be used with a single bulb fixture and 1 reflector. But I can give you feedback on how to utilize the 10.0 if you can't replace it.

Is this going to be used with a baby? Set up would be a bit different based on this because they will screen climb the top.

11-12 inches to the basking branch below it
Hello and I have 5 month old Panther and has a 10.0 which is 9 inches above. Cannot easily rearrange the cage.

He enjoys the spot and the heat temp is fine up there. Growing very nicely. Should I downsize to a 5.0 ?

Many thanks !!

It depends on the UVI you're getting at that distance.
If you're concerned (or verify) the UVI level is too high, and you have a reflector, taking the reflector off may (or may not) be enough.

Another remedy is raising the UV higher to increase the distance.

A UV meter (e.g. Solarmeter 6.5) is the best way to tell for sure.

Hello and thanks so much.

No reflector. And I am concerned for the little guy.

I will buy a Solarmeter 6.5. Might you let me know desired reading for baking position?

Thanks very much again.

The only way to know for sure is with a solar meter, and I highly recommend you get one. That being said, if you’re concerned about too high levels of uvb, there is an easier way to reduce the uvi without messing with your fixture: just put another layer of screen under the bulb. You can probably grab a 2’ length of window screen for pretty cheap.
