Administering Baytril

Administering Baytril / Waldo has two infections

So I got back from the vet today and found out that Waldo has an infected tear duct and a respiratory infection. I was given eyedrops and baytril. To administer the Baytril, I was told to open his mouth, stick the syringe deep into his mouth (Almost into his throat, but not exactly) , and give it to him. I asked the vet if Waldo could aspirate it that way, and he said it was very unlikely. However, I just gave him his Baytril, and after I gave it to him he was making a lot of wheezing noises. Should I just release the Baytril in the beginning and middle of his mouth?

Yea, they have a little hole at the back of the throat but it's on the floor of the mouth, not higher up as you might imagine the airways to be. So they can aspirate fluid. I always administer it just past the lips very slowly so they have the time to hold their breath and swallow.

However, I also agree that injecting anything directly into a feeder is easier and less traumatic for everyone! (except the insect...)

i wouldnt redo just wait till the next dose... jmo

Yeah I guess thats a good idea.

I really hope he pulls through. He's still eating well and everything.

Oh and uhhhh.... The vet told me to put his basking temp at 95.... I was like  and didn't say anything. After being on here and learning everything I have, I don't think I should do that. Especially for a young little guy like him. What do you guys think?

I would listen to your vet. I have seen on here where other people have had chams that were sick with RI's and their vets said to raise the temps. JFYI Kammers use those basking temps on a regular basis. They suggest 90-95 for babies and 95-100 for adults.

Then I will do so. Thanks! I had no idea that Kammers and other people did that.

I just thought it was weird and wanted to check up with you guys.

Something that i've always wondered... When they aspirate liquids, what happens? Waldo wheezed a bit but he stopped doing that. Does the liquid stay and build up in the lungs? Does it contribute to the respiratory infection? Do they find a way to clear their lungs?

I am guessing they are like us- When we inhale a bit of liquid we choke and sneeze too. I always assumed that is how I got it out of my lungs. I am guessing it was not a very large dose so it more than likely came up and out.

But as you and I know assuming.....hopefully someone else will confirm this and you can relax:)

Good luck with the doses today

That would be a relief.

Thanks! The doses went better today, but still not good. I got in the eye drops as usual. When I was administering the Baytril, he aspirated a little bit. I tried to slowly let it out in the beginning of his mouth. I guess I have to let it out even slower.

When I did Lily's Baycox I went from the side of her mouth. Only because that was the only place I could get it in between her lips. In thinking doing it there the pressure would go to the other side of his mouth not down the throat- maybe this would help you two:confused:

Thats a great idea, ill definitely try that tonight. I hope he gets better. His colors are just starting to come in.

Let me know how it works out, if it does it was just dumb luck on my part and a stubborn Cham :D

(Ithink that also puts it more in the pocket where they keep the tongue rather than across the tongue)

You are doing everything right for him and his health positive healing vibes healing to you guys

Haha, ill keep you updated for sure. Waldo is really stressed. He's black in his cage now and has been that way since the vet. Im surprised how well he's handling it though. He hasn't hissed or tried to bite at all. He does turn more black when I hold him firmly, but thats it. Otherwise, he's still eating fine.

edit: Chameleon Company is acting very professional about this. If (I hope it doesn't happen, id feel TORN!) Waldo doesn't make it through, Chameleon Company says they will have another one sent out to me since Waldo came to me sick. Lets just hope it doesn't go there... :(

Not even going there with that thought. Continue being a good Dad and watch him soar.

(Now to get off these forums and do something)

Yeah, you're right. I don't have any reason to think like that. He hasn't gotten worse since he's been on the meds or anything!

Me too!

Another reason I LOVE the Cham Co. I bought a cham from another well known breeder who came to me with an RI that manifested itself not 4 days after I got him and the breeder didn't offer to help at all. You've had Waldo now for what, at least 2-3 weeks and Jim's still offering to replace him? That's an excellent business right there.

Yeah, Chameleon Company is FANTASTIC. I love doing business with them because I know i'm in good hands. Thats pretty low that the breeder didn't offer any help.

Believe it or not, its actually been almost two months! Its just that shortly after he came in, I told Jim that Waldo was scratching his eyes. We thought it was vitamin A but it was the tear duct infection.

When you thought it was a Vit A problem what did you do to try and fix it??

Also, can you post a pic of what you are using to administer the oral meds?? My chams that get mad and open their mouth as soon I open the cage are easy to give oral meds to....but I have a couple of females that are very passive and will not open their mouths no matter what! Actually right now one female is gravid and will gape at me if i even glance her way right now....
