don't kill ladybugs
The reason you have ladybugs is because you have aphids. Ladybugs are the best aphid predators. Try and release the mantids away from the ladybug populations to actually control the aphids better.
illegal in CT
It is illegal to kill mantises in CT since they are the state insect (or at least it was when I was a kid growing up there). Only the specific one that is the state insect though, not all mantids.
Also, Chinese mantid females have longer thoraxes, but fewer discrete segments...
treated wood is bad
Stay away from treated wood and woods that give of oils like pine. Seal whatever wood you use well or the humidity can cause it to split. PVC works well as a frame, although not as nice as a good wooden cage.
Still may be chinese
That still may be a Chinese mantis. There is some variation. They are some of the largest mantids and can get up to 6". If it is in the 5-6" range, it probably is a Chinese mantis.
