Hendershot Had a Prolapse Yesterday

Yesterday my little man Hendershot had a prolapse. With help and encouragement from my good friend Dr. Ivan Alfonso, via text messaging, I was able to get it back in with some KY after a soak in cold sugar water. I can't thank Ivan enough. He had me wrap it to keep it from coming back out. He has been unwrapped since 8 am this morning and so far so good but now I'm worried about what will happen when he poops. Hendershot is very old and I just don't know if he could make it through surgery if he has to have it amputated. He has his good days and his bad days and I know eventually he will only have bad days and I will have to let him go but I was not expecting this. Today is a good day so far and he looks good and his color is good. I just hope it will stay in.

This is Hendershot.

Hendershot,, you're past the age of needing to show off your business, just keep it in please!
Seriously though, I hope he doesn't have a reoccurrence, I know you're sitting on pins and needles waiting on him to poop.. Hopefully it will be uneventful!!!
Buy the way,,, what causes that to happen?

Thank you Lisa. Dr. Alfonso said hemipenis prolapses have no definitve reason for happening and they seem to just happen spontaneously. His guess is that they get inflamed at times , maybe even when chameleons rub their butts on branches but he said there is no definitve cause. He did say that cloacal prolapses on the other hand can happen when there is chronic diarrhea or even chronic constipation.

I had heard being over weight or to many hornworms could cause prolapse but he said he couldn't even think of a correlation between feeder works and cloacal prolapses but maybe people are looking at it from the angle that hornworms are so watery that it could give chameleons diarrhea.

How's my favorite Blue Boy doing today? Hopefully an uneventful day. Keeping Hendershot in our prayers :).

Praying for Hendershot. I remember a few weeks or so ago you posted about his 6th hatch day (correct me if I'm wrong on his age). Wishing the best outcome for you both.

Feel better soon, Hendershot.

Thank you Michael. Hendershot had another good day today. Thank you and Andera for keeping him in your prayers. He will be going with Lottie to Dr. Mader's Friday for a check up.

Thank you Amanda for your prayers and well wishes. Yes, Hendershot just turned 6 on April 21st. He's been with me longer than any of my other chameleons and very special to me.

Jann, What did Dr. Alfonso say to do to get the hemipenis back in? I just had my first hemipenis prolapse a couple of days ago, and I am not sure I did the right thing.

Did you put a pad over his vent to make a pressure bandage, or is it just a light wrapping with little pressure?

I see you are taking Lottie in Friday. How is she doing?

Hi Janet,

Yes, there was a bandage under the wrapping with a little KY on it.

Lottie's little belly is swollen. You can see pictures and read about it here.

Jann,
Sorry to hear about Hendershot, but so glad he had a good day today. Of all your chameleons, Hendershot has always been my favorite- I just love the blue boys! He is one of the reasons that I got Phineas. Have a safe trip to Dr. Mader's. Hoping for good news for both Lottie and Hendershot.

Deb

I'm glad you were able to help him retract his "stuff." Poor guy, may he have many, many more good days. I hope all news is good news at his and Lottie's next appointment.

Thank you so much Deb. Hendershot and I have always appreciated your kind comments over the years. He had another good day today and his color has been good all week. He'll have a long ride tomorrow to Dr. Mader's. My petsitter's going with me so we can keep him out of Lottie's sight. My husband will be petsitting.

Thank you Melissa. He did a tiny little poop this morning and passed a coiple of sperm plugs. I was telling Ivan about it and he said sperm plugs might could cause a prolapse, that he hadn't thought about that.

Poor boy, I'm happy you were able to take care of him. Poor old man. I'm hoping he doesn't have another prolapse. Your babies sure are keeping you on your toes.

Thank you Rachelle. Yes, my guys certainly do keep me on my toes all the time.

Hope Hendershot did well on the ride. ;)

Hendershot was excellent on the long car ride, at the vets and the restaurant. He and Lottie are both now sleeping in the hotel. Hendershot's check up went well. Dr. Mader thinks he's doing very well for an old guy. He does want me to give him a little drop of Medicam once a day for his any pain and discomfort that comes along with age. His joints looked good in his x-Rays and if he has another prolapse he wants me to do the same thing I did last time. I'm still praying he doesn't have another one of those. Thank you to everyone for your prayers and concerns.
