Not sugar paste - you don't want grains of sugar getting caught up in his 'bits'! What people suggest is sugar water to help it shrink back down and retract. Whatever you do you need to keep it moist until it retracts or you can get him to a vet (which you should do if it doesn't go back in on its own). I have never experienced a hemipenal prolapse, thankfully, but I am sure someone who has will help you more. If the prolapse is severe it will require the vet to re-insert the hemipenis and possibly have the vent temprarily stitched so that it doesn't prolapse again straight away.

You do not want to wait, the tissue will become necrotic and after that it can infect the living tissue.

You would tell the vet that your chameleon has a hemipenal prolapse, and tell them what you have tried and ask them what they think you should do.

It has to be a chameleon vet. Do not take him to a regular vet for this. If a regular vet says that they can fix it instead of going to a specialist, go to the specialist.

i have had to "fix" a couple proplapse. Here is how I did it.

1. ice cold water with lots of water. Not a paste but Ice cold water with lots of sugar fairly well dissolved. I sat for about 15 minutes and kept gently pouring the ice water over my baby.

2. Next take ky jelly and massage it back into where it needs to be. When I say massage, be gentle but be prepared to put some pressure behind it. First time I just rubbed like it would jump in, not so, you have to press about 3 times as much pressure as you would think.

3. After you get it in watch him carefully for the next couple days to make sure he doesn't proplapse again.

4. If you can't get it in, take these directions to your vet. The process is the same as a dog, cat or cow. The animal is just smaller.

But the vet I went to didn't know what he was doing. He over dosed my cham and he died. The surgery went fine it was the pain meds after that they got wrong.

But if that's the only vet there is take him. If he needs the surgery get it, but be very careful with the pain meds.

If still an issue, keep it clean by spraying with water. Rinse it clean. Then sprinkle it with powdered suger, creating a reverse osmotic effect. Sugar pastes and granulated sugar may work, but sprinkled powdered sugar is the time-proven remedy. The suger will hurt NOTHING !

If the hemipene is allowed to dry, or become infected or swollen, then you have an issue requiring a vet.

hi! we just got home from the vet. I tried what laurie instructed but the hemipenis keeps coming out so i decided to bring my little guy to the vet. the vet applied mannitol on the prolapse area and put him to sleep via general anesthesia. she stitched up both sides of the vent we will be visiting the vet after a week and see if she could remove the stitch by then. do i need to apply anything on the vent to help with the swelling? can i spray water on him for misitng? and if there's anything i could give to him to help with the swelling or any meds please let me know i would like to give my boy everything i can without hurting him.

I would reject any treatment involving "pain meds". Your critter died after vet care, so it would seem difficult to recommend a similar path. Pain meds make no sense to me.

If needed, amputation of a hemipene is not a difficult task for a vet, followed by about 7 days of antibiotics. It is that simple.
