Worried about my Grabby!

Temps/Humidity

Okay peeps, I spruced up her cage a bit. I have plants...not live...but they provide lots of coverage for her. So, check that off the list. When live plants come into season and I can find one that will fit in her cage, that'll be an option. Next, she doesn't need a top yet. She can climb up to the top, but she has yet to show desire to leave her home. As I've read in other threads, they need to feel safe to be happier, well she feels safe in there and has climbed to the top and not crawled out. So, when I can get the proper tools to build a removable top, I'll build her one. For now, she's good. I fixed all of her inner stuff so that she has a specific basking spot. I put the light on the corner rather than inside. She has light and shade, so she can hide out or bask. Check that one off. A vet visit...well, I can't afford a vet visit and don't take that as me not caring for her health. I care very much for her. I haven't handled her much at all today. I only touched her when I needed to redo her plants and I didn't want her to fall off in the process of me rearranging. She sees me and is making her own choices about what she thinks of me. Misting. I misted her a lot today. More so than I think she cared for, but early on she at least drank. She walked under a life when I did it a few minutes ago. I figure she's good for now. Next, I bought a thermometer and humidity measurer. The temp, not under the light, is about 72 degrees and the humidity is going between 50 to 52%. So, is this good, bad, in between? Her new food should be here tomorrow, and I'll remember to stab the little phoenix worms before feeding them to her. Question. Will they live very long after I stab them? I'm really bad about not wanting to waste their food. Anywho, those are the updates. Guys, I've followed most of the suggestions given, so don't read my updates and think I'm not trying to practice your advice. :)

The plants you need are in 'season' year round. If you go to a Lowes or Home Depot or a WalMart (I hate that place) or Target, you will find what your looking for.

Next, she doesn't need a top yet.

Not really sure how you can make that call... she will make a move to leave whenever she feels like it.

A vet visit...well, I can't afford a vet visit and don't take that as me not caring for her health. I care very much for her.

A lot of us can understand this. I for one can not afford a vet visit either... But luckily nothing has come up lately I can't handle with the left over vet things I got the last time I was there.

I haven't handled her much at all today. I only touched her when I needed to redo her plants and I didn't want her to fall off in the process of me rearranging.

Good to hear! Just let her do her thing... and remember to put a top on the cage. You won't touch her for a few days and all of a sudden she'll be comfy enough to make a run for it.

She sees me and is making her own choices about what she thinks of me.

Remember she isn't human. She ONLY thinks of you as some big thing she doesn't understand. She might start to see you as her feeder and maybe maybe have some paciance with you.

Misting. I misted her a lot today. More so than I think she cared for, but early on she at least drank. She walked under a life when I did it a few minutes ago. I figure she's good for now.

Most chams hate getting misted. It will take a minute of continous misting to get them interested in drinking sometimes. Using hot water from the tap in your mister each time will create a warm mist. This will help encourage her to drink.

Next, I bought a thermometer and humidity measurer. The temp, not under the light, is about 72 degrees and the humidity is going between 50 to 52%. So, is this good, bad, in between?

She needs to have a higher humidity than 50%. She should be pretty high about 65% is good. When you can buy a cool mist humidifier. The Vick's 5100N works well because you can plumb a 2" pipe to it and direct the flow if need be. Or you can just place it next to the cage and direct the vent into her cage. be sure to use some sort of filtered water. maybe RO water if you can. Run it on a low-mid to high-mid level.

You need to poke a hole if she doesn't chew on the worm... So first I would offer her a worm and see if she'll eat it. If she eats it... poke the next one. The reason you need to poke a phoenix worm is because they will not digest unless they are chewed on properly. The skin must be broken for your cham's digestive juices to digest the worm. So maybe the first one is eaten and maybe its not digested... at least now you know she'll eat them.

Just an idea

After you have done all that leave her be for a week or two and see how she is. If you have a question start a new thread. This one is getting pretty convoluted and pretty long. You need to ask a question, get answers and follow advice. If you aren't going to follow the advice don't keep asking the question over and over.

We try to be helpful here but it is hard to see if your question has already been answered by someone else pages ago. Thank you Lyanlynn and good luck with your cham. I'm sure that if you follow the advice of Summoner12 and all the other people who tried to help and answer your questions your little one will thrive.

Its a good idea to keep the thread going.. I wouldn't start a new one.

Jan, go to your User CP and change your settings for the forum... You can have up to 40 posts per page. To me this thread is three pages... but the third page is only the last two posts (well now three...). It helps get through threads when you can see many posts at once.

good idea Summoner12, Lyanlynn has Grabby eaten anything yet?

Nope. I had to handle her before to get her to eat the mealworms, and now I put them in a little container inside her home. She doesn't pay them any attention. I'm thinking she's gone on a hunger strike. I'm expecting crickets and phoenix worms any day now, so hopefully she'll decide to eat something.

She could be on a hunger strike (because mealworms are all youve ever fed her right) or she could be not eating from stress, I hope that she pulls through and its the first one, new foods sometimes entice chams to start eating again

You never answered my question...is she pooping?

Is she eating at all now?

Does she raise her head in the air at times and gape?

Thanks. It is much easier to read the threads! ;)

Sorry! She is pooping...I saw it on the bottom and I watched her hike up a leg and poop today. She has not eaten in awhile. She does that occasionally, but I make sure I mist her if she's doing that. I take it that she's thirsty. She'll drink after that too.

They should not have an odor-their stool should not really have an odor unless they have parasites. She needs to see a Vet.

Is it odd that Grabby emits an odor? I tried looking that up, but couldn't find anything on it.

It means she is very sick. Could be any number of things- infection possibly but the first thing that springs to mind is parasites. Their droppings smell extra foul if they are carrying parasites. You should really go to the vet. Get a loan from a friend or parents or get a credit card or something.

Her poop doesn't stink, or I haven't smelled it yet. She had an odor when I bought her.

If the vet is any good He or She will recommend euthanizing this animal.
This thread has become almost as torturous for me to read as I am imagining it is for this little chameleon to hang onto life.
Again, I am not blaming lyanlynn.
I blame the seller's lack of good advice, not to mention the audacity to sell an animal in this condition.
I am sorry, but in my opinion you have a choice:
Be merciful, or let it stretch out for another week or so. Either way this animal is not long for this world.
