What Nikon Model to choose

I'm ready to purchase a new DSLR. I'm looking for a Nikon model that will rival my old Canon A1. I'm looking for a camara that can be used in manual mode . I'm quite unfamiliar with whats available or the differences in models,( other than resolution in Mpix), so if anyone has any suggestions on where I might begin looking , please do tell.....

Suggested lenses would also be nice info...again thx

Any of the Nikon DSLR cameras will surpass the Canon A1. All of them will satisfy your needs in features and Megapixels and Resolution etc.

Do you have Canon Lenses that are valuable? Have you thought about staying with Canon to still use your lenses but just buy a dslr body. I'm a nikon shooter and supporter, but sticking with what you have often makes sense.

The D40 or D40x will be all you need. A cheaper discontinued D50 (What I use) will too.

For consumer grade camera gear, it's more about the lenses, and less about the bodies.
