What Constitutes a Reputable Dealer?

My wife and I purchased a Jackson’s 16 days ago, and had problems with it right from the very beginning. He just wouldn’t eat, and today he finally died. When I called the store and asked if I could get even a partial refund, I was told that I was basically SOL. The manager of the store even had a slightly condescending tone to his voice when he told me this. This is a store that we’ve spent a lot of money at over the years, and recently we started having problems with them. We had also purchased a mercury vapor lamp and a florescent fixture from them that day, and when we got home the fluorescent fixture was not in the bag. We had to make a half hour drive back there the next day to retrieve it. They didn’t apologize or anything; they just gave us the fixture. When we got home we discovered the mercury vapor lamp was defective, so we had to drive back there again the following day to exchange it. That bulb was also defective, and we had to make a third trip back the following day. This time the manager adamantly maintained that it was impossible that two bulbs could be defective, and that our fixture must be responsible. He told us we would just have to contact the manufacturer and take it up with them. I put my foot down and eventually forced him to give us a refund (he only had two bulbs), but it was like pulling teeth. He even had the audacity to charge us a restocking fee. By now we’ve gone through an entire tank of gas and spent a dozen hours straightening out this mess. We never received any sort of apology or acknowledgement that we had been grievously inconvenienced.

Now to the crux of my question: is this type of behavior par for the course? Or should we write this guy off and never do business with him again? Our next planned purchase is a female Nosy Be, and I am very intrigued by some of the vendors I have learned about through this message board, particularly Kammerflage. I very much look forward to doing business with them in the near future. However, is the treatment we received from this guy normal for this industry? Is this what we can expect from everybody? Vendors, please speak up!

Sorry to hear about your loss. Unfortunately, pet stores generally only care about the money aspect of things and do whatever they can to make money.

There are plenty of reputable breeders on this site to buy a chameleon from. Have a look at the site sponsors. Also, a great online place to shop is www.lllreptile.com for your husbandry, nutrition and feeder needs.

Definitely write that pet store off and never do business with them again.

Best of luck.

It definatly is not the norm. One thing that I think we ALL agree upon here is that petstores are pretty much clueless when it comes to chameleons. I dont even go into the larger ones anymore, its too sad to see corporate put certain (cost saving) husbandry pratices in effect that are 100% wrong.

What I can tell you is that the people on this forum are OUTSTANDING, and there is hope out there for a happy ending. I would recommend any of the breeders here and buy from,. Not only are they very knowedgeable about these little miracles of nature, but they are top notch individuals. I have seen many posts from all of them, and they are very helpful and supportive in this community.

I personally bought from a breeder here on the forums (locally) and couldnt be more pleased. I talk to him about once every 2 weeks to update em on my little guy, or to just chat.

Another tip to alleviate pet store hassels and the BS that usually goes with them is to start breeding your own feeders as well! Get a dubia colony going, order from someone online, and kiss the petstores goodbye!

Best of luck on your Nosy if you end up picking her up. Sorry to hear about your incident, must have been frustrating to say the least.

1000 crickets for 20 bucks, freight paid. 160 W mercury vapor lamp for $40—color me impressed. We will definitely be doing business with these people, thanks.

Glad I could point you in the right direction. They are very reputable around here, that's for sure.

Thanks for the sympathetic support. It was particularly disappointing because my wife bought the Jackson’s with the birthday money her employer had given her. She had wanted one for a long time, but we couldn’t afford it. The check she got from her boss was earmarked for something special; it wasn’t to be used for paying bills or buying groceries. Right now she’s struggling to get the taxes finished before Tuesday, and the tears aren’t helping. I need to make sure her beer glass doesn't run dry tonight. :(

there are a lot of sheist balls in the industry, thats why its a good idea to pay with credit card as much as possible so you have the last laugh when they get charged a merchant chargeback/dispute fee for doing poor business, but thats a last resort for people like that who go out of the way to give you a problem, when if he would have just hooked u up you'd have spent more money there

Yeah that is a bummer... sounds like it was all a bad omen! That was my first lesson in chameleon care...NEVER BUY FROM A PET STORE! They are not specialized in the care and they usually come with something already wrong with them. I am assuming that is the case with your cham. He was probably already doomed and there was nothing you could do. But the good thing is that you are not giving up! I just got my panther chameleon from Kammerflage Kreations... Google that... They were GREAT!!!! I have had my chameleon for 3 months now and he is a VERY HEALTHY and very active chameleon! I would do it all over again if I had to... which I am sure I will one day!!! Good luck to you!!!

Do you mind sharing with us what shop this was?

Just so you know if you ever do have a lamp fail on you, warrenty is pretty simple if you have the receipt... or don't. I had a Zoomed 18" 5.0 lamp die after using it two weeks. I called Zoomed and they said "send us the receipt, fax or mail and we'll send you a lamp." I told them I didn't have the receipt and she said "just send us the lamp then" and I did. I am in SoCal... I sent the lamp ground UPS from work on a monday and had the replacement in my hands Wednesday morning at 10am.

Wish that could have worked so easily with the Panther I had die on me from their compacts.....

I would love to. Administrator—is this permissible?

lol don't you know... post now.. ask for forgiveness later haha J/K

On a more serious note. I don't know the rules for sure. I can say that I have named names when I am not satisfied with a company and had no problems.

If he doesn't respond within 24 hours, I'll post it. He can always delete it later if he has an issue with it. :) I've already linked to this thread from a bunch of business review sites.

ETA: Oh, duh. Here—I’ll just do it this way. Can’t imagine anybody would have a problem with that.

To respond to your question about reputable breeders, you really can't go wrong with the Kammers. I've bought about half my chams from them and they've always been top notch.

There's also a quite a few very good breeders on this site. Just search around and ask questions if you have any.

I've also had lots of dealings with LLL and Big Apple Herp and both have been very customer service oriented. Both have cleared up mistakes (including a defective bulb, LLL) with one phone call. I just sent them the bad one and they sent a replacement (and that was a month after purchase! I was planning ahead for tube replacement and didn't find out it was bad until then).

It sounds like you had a bad experience with a bad shop.

unfortunatly, retail pet shops often charge an incredible amount for exotic supplies.

The zoomed mercury vapor bulbs that sell online for $40-$50 were selling at pet shops for $120.00

Reptariums that go for $30 online sell for $50-$60 at major chain pet stores.

It's almost impossible to get animals at a reasonable cost.

If you want to buy exotics, it's best to buy from the breeder that hatched them. The most reputable dealers online usually breed their own animals.

there are plenty of people breeding animals that are not reputable, sadly. it's best to ask around, and you'll soon find out.

The Kammers, for instance, charge $85 for their veileds. That's even more than I charge, and I charge a lot! but it's worth it. I know, I bought one from them. yeah, you're paying a premium. But, when you WANT premium, you should expect to PAY a premium. you will find that most of the reputable dealers are not cheap...

...but you'll also find that they're all cheaper than pet stores! Especially when you factor in the cost of a replacement chameleon for the soon-to-be-dead one from the pet store. been there done that.

I can reccomend the Kammers because of personal experience. They're great. I can't think of anyone that has had a bad experience with them.

As promised, here’s the identity of the store in question:

Exotic Life Fish & Reptiles
9919 Topanga Canyon Blvd
Chatsworth, CA

I realize that I already identified them through my link above, but I want to make sure they see this thread next time they Google themselves or check traffic to their page.
