Vet NYC Area? Good exotics pet stores?

Lathis

So I'm being relocated to NYC! Very excited but a lot to do before we get fully moved/settled. We will probably end up on the Jersey side (taxes and cost of living), and I'll work in Tribeca. However, I would go anywhere for a good chameleon vet.

Any current recommendations? I couldn't tell if the vets listed in the stickies were still in practice.

Anyone have any experience with these guys? They seem promising...

Also, any good pet stores for exotics in the city?

That's exciting news! Best of luck with the move :). I haven't been in NY for too many years to know if any of the old stores are still around, but I'll do some digging for ya.

That's awesome!! HUGE change from KC! My parents used to live in upstate and by brother went to NYU. I wish I had some recommendations but they weren't into the reptiles like I am.

Thanks! I lived in NYC about ten years back while I was in grad school. I only left because the hubby and I were in a long distance relationship at the time - he was back in KC. I'm really excited to be going back, but it's going to be a big change for the hubs. Being the trailing spouse is hard, so I'm trying to be really supportive of him.

I'm heading up in January (eek!). The hubs and the menagerie will follow in about six months. We have to sell the house, get him a job, settle stuff in KC, all before he can make the move. I gotta find a cheap (haha) room for rent, too.

Yea, good luck with that! lol. What an adventure. I'm the trailing spouse in my house. But I can't complain. We've been to some pretty great places we would have never chosen on our own. Moving is a pain, but you get used to it. Our next move will probably be this summer and I have never had so many animals in a move before!! I went a little overboard while living here, oops.

Welcome to the Empire State!! Home of me and soon to be Buck ( the terminator).. Together we will crush the Parsons alliance (west Coast) and rule the Parsons galaxy with the iron fist!...

Don't forget my Parsons family is also in the Empire State. Votes to change Empire State to Parsonii State. Sorry, I am Western New York, so unfortunately I don't have any veterinarian recommendations for NYC. I also really wish I had a better camera than a point and shoot.

@Lathis the animal medical center at 62st I used them back in the 90's that when I had my panther's, meller,Parson's they're pretty pricey but I was satisfied with the results and they're open 24 hours a day. Now the Avian and exotic vet only deal with Exotics which is a better choice I myself once My Boy Hits 1 year old I be taking him for a check up there I'm also looking for a good Vet for him hope this helps...(y)

Well....there goes the neighborhood. I live in NYC and the center for avian and exotic medicine is my vet! They have a great staff and a fantastic facility. Just watch out with their appointment policy, tardiness is not accepted according to their website. I went late once without issue though. They do see a lot of animals there. the big 3 Drs. Pliny, Grodio, and Wilson are all very qualified and while I've never met Dr. Pliny, he's got the most experience. I imagine he's the big cheese as he's left to start other avian and exotic centers in the past. Dr. Wilson is my regular vet, and she seems very knowledgeable and they appear to see enough chameleons in their practice to put me at ease. Also as a warning, the vet techs are all nice, personable, and great handling chameleons, but I kind of doubt their knowledge in the chameleon field. Not trying to put them down, just noticed she was more knowledgeable about birds, but then again I don't know anything about birds so they've got me there. regardless they run the gamut as far as animals seen there, and are considered the premier exotic vet in the city. Back in the day, we used to just bring all of our reptiles to the animal medical center in midtown, but I've stopped as I figured a specialist was better in the long run. nothing wrong with their practice, but they've only got 3 exotic vets on staff and only two of them do reptiles. But keep them on your radar because they are open 24/7 and will take walk ins under emergency circumstances. As far as exotic pet stores in the city, the only good one, Fauna, just closed, so I am relegated to the internet for that, but if you discover a good one, hit me up, dawg. I'm not gunna be much help here, but there's also an avian and exotic center(not related) in Cherry Hill and a veterinary center for birds and exotics (confused yet?) in Bedford hills that is super experienced with chameleons I think the main Dr. over there Dr. Hess, started the practice to offer a knowledgeable veterinary practice for chameleon owners.. Also another guy right over the bridge in Jersey who used to breed chameleons in his spare time still trying to track that down so bear with me.

This is very helpful - thank you! If you think of the guy in Jersey, let me know.

I live in NYC as well. There's not much regarding reptiles or chameleons. But Avian and Exoctics seem to be the best (one of the only) options. But 99% of my supplies are ordered online. Since its cheaper and seems to always arrive pretty fast.

But anytime I need something urgent I'll just go to petco. The one with the "largest" reptile selection is the one on union square.

Hope this helps.
