Very bad news!!!

I have a friend that lost around 40-60 geckos recently. I am so sorry this happened. That's summer for you. Ants and heat spikes. Best of luck.

You can buy a swamp cooler at Home Depot and hook it up in your garage, or somewhere else in your house, and it will help save money & keep costs down. It does bring some humidity into the air, but it helps with the heat.

That's true. I bought mine at Home Depot. I got the MasterCool that was just over $400. It pushes out a lot of cool air and even works outdoors.

I have a swamp running and I'm still worried about my eggs. It had a hard time keeping the temp below 80 in this heat, I had to add fans.

I love my swampcooler. Mine is an older model that I got for free... only bad thing is it only has enough of a water holder thingy (d'uhh) to last 2 hours.

Oh man... What a bummer Josh. Especially when they are so close to hatching. I have lost a clutch of Veileds to a temp spike, and it really bums you out. Best of luck with the ones that are left!

I know I'm realy late to say this, but I'm so sorry for your loss. :(

may your luck get better in the up comming days.
crosses fingers for ya buddy.

re bad news

that is heartbreaking , i was looking forward to the invasion of the quads, i left my clutch of xanths for 3 hrs today, i only meant to be gone one hr , but had car problems, by the time i got back, some were clearly heat stressed , a dangerous thing for all neonates, but i think especially dangerous for jax, one was on the terry cloth bottom of the cage and not looking so good , luckily i caught things just in time, and fogged the cage and surrounding area with refrigerated water (i felt the situation was too urgent to wait for the gradual cooling thing) and within 2 or 3 minutes the temp had dropped about 14* (from almost 90) and about 5 min later everyone was lookin good , i feel so fortunate , another hr and i probably would have lost most of mine. ps i follow many of your posts and am truly sorry to hear about it , i said this in an earlier post, but feel the situation merits saying it again, all good cham keepers feel a profound sense of loss when they lose an animal , but i think with the more delicate species, it is even more profound , because you have to put that much more of not only effort, but of yourself, into it ,it seems to make things that much more heart breaking when you lose a delicate (not meant as a slight to keepers of the hardier species , i think only some body who has kept both hardy and delicate can truly appreciate what i am trying to say)

Not just so close, they are hatching now! Like I said, we are moving in 9 days to a house with ac. Why couldn't we have moved a week ago?

Thanks everyone. There will be more, you can count on it.

So sorry Josh, that does suck!

Elisa, with a little bit of ingenuity you can build a swamp cooler for less than 100 bucks. You can do it for much less than that if you have a decent aquarium pump laying around.

List of parts needed:
2, 3ft sections of closed ended gutters.
10 ft of small link chain (guesstimate)
1, 5 gallon bucket (or larger) you can get 20 gal buckets from walmart for like 5 bucks.
about 4ft of tubing for the pump and the return line.
Maybe 2 8ft 1x2s
1 powerful aquarium pump
1 box fan
You'll need some odds and ends like fittings, screws, and hose clamps.

I know it's too late for you as you already have one. But if anyone reading this wants some help on this as a project PM me I'd be more than happy to help.

Josh that really sucks. I am so sorry to hear you lose those eggs. All I can say is you are excellent at what you do and mother nature will mess with us now & then no matter what we do. If you had AC there could have been a power outage, it was out of your control. But there will be more!!! I still have to buy an unrelated female for little jet, so you already have advance sales.:D

Hey everyone, just wanted to give an update, this is Michelle Josh's wife, the baby that we didn't think would make it yesterday died before the night was over. It looked as though he couldn't breath and kept gasping for air, heatstroke maybe due to the high heat? The other 3 I bring to my work everyday and then home at night, we had one of the 3 remaining eggs start to "drain" this morning so I thought we would have another hatch, however this has happened with some of the others that we lost and then nothing, if this little guy doesn't make it then we will only have another 2 hopeful eggs from this clutch remaining. This is heartbreaking, I watch them all day and hope that I will see movement and a little healthy quad will emerse, I just can't stand to see fully developed little babies ready to hatch and then die at the last minute. I feel awful and just hope that the rest of our eggs that we have from the other clutches will continue to develop and be healthy. Thanks again for the comments everyone, we really appreciate it. The two little ones that hatched and are at home seem to be doing great, however we have found that in the first 2 weeks they can go either way, if they make it past that time then they should be good to to.

Michelle

We all feel so bad for you Michelle and Josh and can totally empathize with you. We are a least crossing our fingers for the little ones that made it.

Even with A/C you can have problems. We have central air and have come home to an unusually hot house before (if it's really hot for a long period of time, sometimes the air just can't keep up) and I am frantically trying everything to get all the chams (and the house) cooled down. Or, there is the occasional time when it's the hottest day of the year (over 100) and the central air unit goes out. That happened to us last year. Luckily, we didn't lose any chams or eggs, but we were expecting the worst.

In any event, we all feel for you guys.

Josh and Michelle,

I am really sorry this has happened and feel your loss. I got the think geek fridge and so far like it. Yesterday it got to be 90 plus in the house and the fridge maintained at 70.

Keep on, keepping on. :)

Take Care
Amy

I'm really sorry to hear this bad news. May you have nothing but the very best of luck with the rest of the eggs. Jann

Hey guys, really sorry to hear this news. When I was breeding quads I lived just 4 blocks from the ocean, where it's supposed to stay cool, but it's difficult during summer. Your remaining eggs really shouldn't be allowed to go over 74F if you don't want to see birth defects. In my experience, even a few days over that temp can cause problems with this species. Wishing the best of luck with the rest.

Thanks again everyone for the kind words. We ended up with only 2 survivors out of all the eggs of this clutch. They two seem to be doing good but won't really be out of the woods for at least 2 weeks or so, then we will know that they are eating, growing and doing ok with the humidity. Thankfully we are moving next week to a house with AC so our eggs that are being kept at my work (Michelle) right now will be able to be at home and kept cool. Thanks again everyone and we just hope that the next clutch will be here soon and everyone will make it.
