Vermiculite

hi mate
i normally soak the vermiculite in a bowl of water for 10-15 mins, then i get a big handful & squeeze it til there is no drops of water coming from the vermiculite, repeat the process til you have enough vermiculite for your incubation tub

hmm I was taught to put the vermiculite into a big mixing bowl... add some water...mix it all around.... then take a big hand full, squeeze it hard. if water comes out, add more vermiculite, if it no water comes out it's too dry, add water. You only want a couple drops of water to be squeezed out.

I never measure it out as I have been doing this for many years, but I start with a selected amount of vermiculite. Add a little bit of water at a time and mix it up. Afetr you mix up up, check how wet/dry the vermiculite is. In the end, the vermiculite should be moist enough that when you grab a handful it should clump together. If you squueze the clump in your hand and water drips out, it is too moist.

ok... so clumpy.... not drippy....?

I learned the method from Steve... sounds like you two have the same method. I think I mixed up the part where water should or should't come out of your hand.

does the water have to be distilled or can it be normal tap. For my chams i use boiled water left to cool

ok i will boil it to be on the sfae side. I bought two bags that weigh about 800g with both of them together. Will this be enough for veiled eggs and how do i moisten it when it dries?

I use a mini turkey baster. I just drip water along the side of the container. You might have need to do this if you are using enclosed containers (no vents at all). If you have vented cups then I just monitor the moisture build up on the lit. if I see build up after I add water and then it goes away, I wait a couple of weeks before adding more water... but it all depends on where you are and how dry your house is. A local cham keeper adds water to the bottom of the incubator to keep moisture up when using vented cups.
