Hey guys im new to the forum and CHAM world and i need some help xD

First off let me say ive been doing research for about 3 months now and i will have my tank ( a very big terrarium of glass with vents (exoterra) for ventalation)

Now question 1, whats hardier? a veild or a panther. since its my first one id like one that isnt as sensitive plus veilds are cheaper :D

Secondly, would you recommend the mist king system? ive heard alot about it

and i believe that is it. If you have any advice and or tips please let me know :)

What size is the exoterra and where are you located? this has a lot to do with what you can house in there.

Both panthers and veileds are just as easy to keep, it mostly depends on your budget.

Having an exoterra, I would not suggest a misting system unless you cut the glass on the bottom and make a very good drainage.

not sure the size of it becuase atm its at the pet store its fairly big id say about 4-5ft tall and 3-4 ft wide.

Im located in ontario canada.

Would you suggest building a cage? if so is there a link to a guide of some sort thanks :)

Since you are in Canada, I actually suggest the exoterra, if and only if you can get the appropriate size. You want to have one of about the size you mentioned (not smaller than 2x2x4') if you are going to house a veiled or a panther. If you are just going to have one chameleon, i suggest you just hand mist. It's not really worth it to have an automated misting system if you can hand mist. If you still want one, you can get the Mistking, but as I said before, you need to cut the glass on the bottom and make a good drainage because there is A LOT of water pumped every time it turns on.

Alright , would it be possible to put a plastic tub at the bottom and use a pump (like a fishtank cleaner) to suck out the excess water every few days? cause i would like the mist king :)

Heya!

I just bought my first cham ever 2 weeks ago and I sat there having to decide over the nosy be or the veiled. The employee urged me to the veiled cham but after it freaked out on my arm, puffed up and started hissing, I then had a heart attack and said "omg omg get it off get it off!!!" I had no idea they hissed. phew. The 65$ price tag sure looked better than the 350$ price tag on the subadult nosy be...but my heart did melt on these forums after seeing nosy be's. After having the nosy be on my arm and fingers, he then pooped on me. I knew it was love at first...handling? Lol. I really do want a veiled someday but dang...not that one that I met. I paid the extra money and I am happy with my choice. I don't think he likes listening to Lady Gaga in my room though :(

Is there anyway you can go meet the chams you are interested in or are you purchasing them online? It meant a lot more to me to see them and meet them than to order my first one. I will probably end up ordering my next one online, I am already constantly on our sponsors forums checking out the babies :) Hooked after 2 weeks!!

Everyone here recommends the mistking, I was looking into it too. But for now I just hand mist since I only have one cham. I will probably invest it one after getting a permanent setup for my guy.

I would not suggest it as bacteria builds up really quick in the conditions you'll create inside the exoterra. Hot and humid=bacteria play ground. You'd need to find another alternative. There are tools to cut holes in tanks, but it's very tricky and can ruin the hole tank. I use screen cages so I don't know how to create a good drainage on exoterras.. you could use the search function above and see what you find.

If someone will be around every day to mist by hand and you only have the one cage, you don't really need a Mist King. If you need to automate misting because of your schedule you must drain the Exoterra or you'll have a mess as others already mentioned. Find someone locally who drills glass (check with window installers, glass shops or a fish aquarium supply) and have them cut a drain in your cage bottom. Attach a drain fitting or hose running to a bucket below. It will really be the simplest solution. I don't know if the Exoterras use tempered glass or not so check. It makes a difference when drilling it.
