New and inexperienced owner of about a week and understand females need a place to lay eggs. Thought I had a male according to the pet store but from online research believe I have a female. I saw my chameleon climb down the screen to the bottom of the enclosure & briefly exhibit what might be pacing behavior this afternoon. So, I have just added to my chameleon's enclosure 1) a milk jug with the top cut off filled with organic potting soil, & 2) a 2.5' tall ficus tree replanted in organic soil in a black plastic planter pot. Has anyone had success with a similar set up for egg laying? Thank you for your time & consideration!

Hello and welcome to the forums. 
You will want something bigger for her to lay in. Just depends how big the pot is that your ficus is in. She may try to lay down close to the roots. Take a look at this. It's what I go by. Great information from Dez.

Substrate sand?
*Camimom -- sorry for the misspelling before. I bought a bag of extra fine, white play sand. The hardware store told me it is "sanitized." Do I still need to wash it? If it is washed, it will become too wet for digging. It is Kolorscape White Play Sand bought from Ace Hardware distributed by Oldcastle Lawn & Garden (out of Atlanta; closed today for weather).
