hey there i've got a female veild chameleon (Jade) owned her about 18 months and she was quite small when i bought her so guessing she aint to much older than that. she eats well and looks all healthy, apart from a swollen rear leg
she recently laid her second batch of eggs and it was after this i noticed her leg was swollen when she was relaxing on a branch she was letting it hang of there. she won't put any weight on it she can't close her hands either and has seemed unsteady on branches she has fallen a few times. so iv'e taken the higher branches out of her vaverium and put shredded paper on the bottom of it just incase she falls again gives her a little bit of padding
taken her to my vets and had x-rays done nothing is broken. the vet seems to think it is osteomyalitis weekening of the bones due to her laying these eggs takin the calcium out of her system
does anyone know if this is a commom problem with cameleons??? or could it be some other problem that has been over looked??? could she of gotten an infection from digging around in the gravel got some dirt lodged under 1 of her claws and the infection has spread up her lag?? my vet has given me some Baytril antibiotics to give to her 0.1ml a day but to me it doesn't seem to be doing alot no change if anything it might be getting worste :(
she eats well and supplement her meals with nutrobal she likes to be hanndeled still

MBD, is common in veilds not sure of osteomyalitis, not sure if they are alike though, but if they are anything alike then it is serious and you need calcium shots, but wait for more people to chime in

I would venture to say your vet isn't a herpologist??? Someone knowledgeable in reptiles.

Check out this website.

Call your vet and tell him his medicine isn't working. He should be able to give your cham a calcium shot to help the bones if in fact that is what it is.

If you fill out this form the senior members will have a better chance of helping out. Also, please take some pictures and post them so we can actually see the leg.

Thanks and good luck.

that happend to my cham, i video taped him and found out he would hang from top of enclosure by one foot. he would come down and hold that leg out like it was cramped or somthing. i took him to get checked out and the vet said he probably strained the ankle joint. i watched closly for a week or so and slowly the swelling went away. he is fine now, he also doesnt climb on top of enclosure anymore. my cham had full spectrum blood analysis. he was negative on every thing exept he had high calcium levels. no MBD, but it sure looked like it from the swelling.

This may have nothing to do with anything, but...
I believe Nutrobol contains Vitamin d and other vitamins? I wonder if it should not be used daily, but perhaps only once or twice a week? And a plain phosphorous free D3 free calcium powder the other days?

What kind of lighting do you have? What kind of supplements are you using?

I agree. Please describe your lighting and supplements. And I would want to know what you are feeding her feeder bugs, as well. Sorry to hear about Jade. Hopefully she'll recover quickly.

And, while we're at it, the answers to these other questions (from the health forum) would help a whole lot, too:
Cage Info:
Cage Type - Describe your cage construction (Glass, Screen, Combo?) What are the dimensions?
Lighting - What brand, model, and type of lighting are you using? What is your daily lighting schedule?
Temperature - What temp range have you created (cage floor to basking spot)? Lowest overnight temp? How do you measure these temps?
Humidity - What are your humidity levels? How are you creating and maintaining these levels? What do you use to measure humidity?
Plants - Are you using live plants? If so, what kind?
Location - Where is your cage located? Is it near any fans, air vents, or high traffic areas? At what height is the top of the cage relative to your room floor?

Chameleon Info:
Your Chameleon - The species, sex, and age of your chameleon. How long has it been in your care?
Handling - How often do you handle your chameleon?
Feeding - What are you feeding your cham? What amount? What is the schedule? How are you gut-loading your feeders?
Supplements - What brand and type of calcium and vitamin products are you dusting your feeders with and what is the schedule?
Watering - What kind of watering technique do you use? How often and how long to you mist? Do you see your chameleon drinking?
Fecal Description - Briefly note colors and consistency from recent droppings. Has this chameleon ever been tested for parasites?
History - Any previous information about your cham that might be useful to others when trying to help you.

more pics of the rest of the animal, if you can. Could be gout, or a gout-like symptom. Usually, you'll see other symptoms of MBD as well as swellings. Bent casque, bowed forlegs, mushy jaw... Gout can be a bit tougher to diagnose.

What you feeding her and what are you feeding the insects?
(not fish food...not fish food... or dog/cat food)
