What do you guys recommend for the bulb?
Mine went out so I went the the local reptile specialist and they said a power of the sun bulb but it's $80 for a bulb...

I have a 2 and a half month female veiled and a few month old male Senegal, any suggestions?

Most people here use the repti-glow 5.0 Thats what i use on both of my cages. I think the bulb is 20 something bucks each

What were you useing before? The Zoo Med 5.0 Reptisun is the most widely used bulb for a cage. I hear the Arcadias are quite good. I would not use the bulb the so called specialist said to use except for a Free Range type setup.

Reptisun or Reptiglo 5.0 both work. I use the reptisun.

There are a LOT of types of different UV bulbs. Stick to the "5.0" types and you are good.

Also, You need to change UVB bulbs every 6 months regardless. They may still put out (visible) light, but the UV output diminishes and needs to be changed. You should not wait for it to burn out.

What's the downfall of the cfl bulbs? Not enough surface area to get equivalent output of a tube? Same with mercury vapor? I've heard mvb is great for growing *ahem* certain types of plants guess that's a different spectrum than what our chams need.

The compacts are good for smaller cages... Ive been useing the Zoo Med in my smaller cage for years. It helps alot if they are mounted horizontally. The MVB bulbs are good for Free Ranges mostly. They put out alot of heat &UVB you need to mount them alot farther away from the basking branch so you dont fry your cham. I have mine set about 18"s away... this gives me 80 degrees temp and good UVB output;)

I'm going to get mine tmrw, cage is about 4.5 feet tall if I go mercury vapor I suppose I could just set it further away. Just gonna have to see what brands they offer and go from there.

This is my opinion but I feel many here will agree.... Your cham will not always want heat or always want UVB.... In a cage..They should be seperated to an extent. He or she can choose which they want or a combo. A MVB bulb cant do that;) Your chams heat spot should be off to 1 corner or side. Me, Sticktounge & Evil Lost have told you whats best....
