UVB distance....

what if i am using like pet sreen so it blocks a lot more then the normal aluminum screen? and the distance is already pushen the distance of the affectiveness of the bulb

I am going to go out on a limb and say you can't know "for sure" without a light meter. From my understanding the 10.0 bulbs are meant to penetrate the depths of larger than 4' cages. It would stand to reason if your within the 12 inches and your cham is not mashing itself against the roof of the cage to get at the UVB light or spending massive amounts of time under the light, Then your light is ok.

If you don't have a way to suspend the light fixture above the cage, or to elevate it easily... using 10.0 lamps is a bit 'hot' with UVB. 10.0 lamps can be used, but need more room and shouldn't be place directly on top of the cage.

It has been talked about how a 5.0 and 10.0 do have different spectra. the 5.0 being the better of the two.

A Zoo Med ReptiSun 5.0 on a cage similar to LLL's cages should be placed directly over the basking branch and it is a good idea to line the inside of the fixture with aluminum foil. The foil will almost double the lamps output. I also recommend you tilt the heat lamp rather than pointing it straight down. This should help reduce the chance of burn.

You can get an idea here: https://www.chameleonforums.com/some-readings-22893/

thanks for the reading....
but... if you don't line the fixture with foil and are going through regular window screen with a linear 5.0 Reptisun bulb.... how "farish" should it be placed from the basking branch????

Lisa, 6 to 10 inches from where his sits will he fine.

thanks Jann..... sounds good.
i've got to move it over where it will be above his basking area..
do you think that him not being able to bask under it may have had something to do with his decrease in appetite???
thanks,, lisa

In the FR Luie bask under the basking light the most and sometimes when he wants UV he'll sit under the U V light. Could Stanley get any UV at all?

he could only get within about 10" of being right under it.. when we set up the new cage that light got moved over from above the basking area...

that's why i got to wondering if it was doing him any good at all?

At 10" through screen with no reflector your Cham wasn't getting anything of use.

thanks for all of the info,,,,i will be addressing this issue tomorrow... :)
so the inside of the fixture needs to be lined with foil? the regular liner that is inside of a fluorescent light hood doesn't help with this matter??

thanks again,,, lisa

Does the fixture have a shiny bare metal backing? If the area behind the lamp isn't shiny metal (like foil) then I would use the foil. I am sure you have some in the kitchen? It really does help the lamp provide a better amount of light for the cham. it also makes the lamp 'last longer' because the output is still acceptable longer than without a reflector.
