So my uv meter from Light Your Reptiles came today
I took it outside @ 430 California beach time and it read 152
I brought it in to check my bulbs (Krunchs being the most important) and his read an astounding low read of....12! Kruisers was 18 and Krashs was 32
I called Todd, whom I have to say, was so easy to talk to, so helpful, I just can't say enough nice things about this man and his business. Anyway, he told me I was doing it correctly and yes, I better change the bulbs.
He was a little surprised the Reptisun 5.0 linears didn't hold their uv's a little longer, but said Krash's was a good read for now.
So if anyone is concerned about their uv's, or mbd this is a must have from Todd.
p.s. he said his shipment is coming Friday, and for those of you that ordered one, it will be to you soon!
Can anyone give me insight to their reads?

I like to get 25-35 at a basking spot these days.... I just changed out some 10.0 lamps that were on my cages for over a year, almost 14 months! and were reading down to 12 microwatts.

Gotta giggle!, Im on your post reading about the Ecozone, because I must have one and you are so helping me understand its workings. and you are answering my post on uv's!
I was reading about the same distance your photos show, so I am assumimg Krash @ 32 is still ok, the other 2 need to be changed?

Can you tell me about how long your lights were on the cages before you noticed a drop?

A Zoo Med 5.0 should be changed around 6 months. a 10.0 can be placed higher up, and lowered down as it degrades. but it is good to have the meter to track the 10.0 and even 5.0 lamps. You don't want a basking spot to below about 15ish....

I must admit I am blushing a little.:p

It was fun talking with you, and with all the Chameleon Forum folks I have spoken with.
I admire all the effort you are putting into fixing up that little rescued Chameleon, Krunch. I know he will be MBD free in no time.

You have discovered the same way I did...
All of a sudden, a Solarmeter turns this "fuzzy" but important "thing" called UV into something that is very real and measurable.
The anxiety of all the guesswork and speculation are gone in an instant.
It's hard to describe.

Yes, they are an expense, but I encourage all herp hobbyists to get one. Whether they purchase it from me ... or even buy it from someone else.
Because once you use one, you are hooked and don't know how you (or your pets!) made it so long without one.

For those I have a Solarmeter "IOUs" out to, UPS tracking says I will have the next batch in this Friday and I will be communicating with you.
We'll get them right out.

For those of you who still want one, I will be posting again in classified section at the end of week.
We will make sure everyone who still needs one at a good price will get one. :)

I ordered all new bulbs today from LLL, and it feels good to know the uv's will be up to par. I will be interested to take a reading straight from the box, and then continue with a graph, to really understand the decline of uv in zoo med's 5.0 linears.
 
My bulbs came yesterday, and today I switched them out.
Now the dilema;
I put Krashs 24in bulb in, I thought I would give it a chance to warm up, not sure why I did this, but I thought the read might be a little more accurate. It read only 18!! how can that be? I took the reading in the exact spot I read from last week. Now I am completely baffled :eek:

When I placed it about 3 inches from the screen it read a healthy 72, although I am looking for a 32-35 range. when placed at 6inches, where my basking branchs are (basking is 81.5) it drops dramatically to the 18.

Is it possible that uv's are lost during shelf life? that doesn't seem right. could we be lead into a false sense of security that the 5.0 emit the proper uv's?, that also doesn't seem right.

so, let the banter begin!! I hope someone has an idea for me, maybe somehow switch things around so the uv is closer than my basking?

different placement on top of the cage?

I am going to call Todd as well, I am sure he will have an idea!
 
nothing has changed but the bulbs. first read @ 10 min, 2nd @ 30 min. same exact read

I've got no clue on this, was really hoping to have a good output with new bulbs. going to recheck it now
 
I am really glad you started this thread Anne, that is a scary reading for a new bulb!:eek: I wanted to ask you when you had time to check the reading outside at like 5:00 or 6:00 when the sun isn't very strong, I like to leave my guys out at that time and was wondering what kind of UVB they are getting after the sun starts to go down.

I have done 4:30 it was 155
right now it is 5:51 and the read is....81!
had to go outside to take it :D
since I am being told 35 is a good read for indoors, I think 80"s is still perfect when it is warm, yes?
 
Hi Anne! :) Yes 80 is great! Thanks so much. It is still like 85 degrees and so nice out early evening I love to let them stay out, so good to know they are still getting a good amount of UVB! Have you tried it on a really cloudy day?
