Funny how chameleon health can change so quick.

So a few days ago, I posted concerned about his poop. I had a house sitting job that required me to stay the weekend and I left on friday leaving Oliver in the capable hands of my parents. Well, a couple hours ago they said he hadn't moved from his spot....lower part of the cage in 24 hours so my mom freaked out and decided to take him to the vet. All the while, I am still 45 minutes a way.

So she gets the vet and he gets a full checkup (which I needed to have one done anyway). My mom showed her the poop and it concerned her. She felt his stomach and even though Oliver had just pooped, she could feel some still in his gut. She thinks he might have a bacterial parasite and prescribed (I bet you can guess ;)) a low dose Baytrill. I know this one of the most general antibiotics given to reptiles, so does that mean she doesn't think it is serious? Or does she just not know? My mom seemed to have a lot of confidence in her and the vet had experience with reptiles, I just wish I could of been there. :(
I never met the vet, my dad came and got me and we met up later. Oliver seemed fine. Other then his usual lack of color (Which the vet said can happen) from this crazy winter, but eating drinking and pooping just the same.

I got him a new UVB bulb and he ate as soon as he got home.

Are there any side effects of Baytrill and what else could I do if this is a parasite? (Other then get a fecal check done, on next poop)

Not exactly what I had planned to do today, but I am glad Oliver is okay. She did say that he was probably the most healthy chameleon she had seen in her office. :)

You will want to make sure to keep Oliver well hydrated while on Baytril. It would be a good time to buy him some hornworms. :). Why did the vet put him on Baytril? As far as I know it does not cure any type of parasites. I would get the fecal as soon as you can.

I would agree with Jann that he needs to be hydrated as a priority. That poop looks like it just took a long time to come out. You should try hornworms as soon as you can. They are like big water bags and are excellent for hydrating chameleons. They should be used as treats once your chameleon is hydrated though and should not replace more nutritious feeders. I try to keep hornworms around on a regular basis to keep all the chameleons well hydrated. Silkworms are good for this too and actually better than horns if you can get those. Hope this helps.

Just ordered both kinds, Oliver loves them both and he will be very happy. :) I'm so glad the freakish cold weather seems to be going away (at least here in Texas)...Oliver need his sun time, so he can get bright again!

The only other weird thing about that poop, was it was at night, at a time he should of been sleeping. I don't know if I accidentally woke him up, or he woke up to poop. The vet said that was weird as well. Do reptiles usually wake up to poop?
