Update on Joses parasites.

Some of you might have seen some posts of me and people discussing his coccidia and I'm afriad that the parasites might win. He's gotten really skinny, wont eat, eyes sunken all in 2 days. I've seen him drink a lot yesterday so at least he's hydrated. I'm so nervous about this I can't even sleep. I'm taking out some plants for cleaning today and I'm going to put towels on the bottom of the cage in case he falls. Wish me luck .

That is progress. I haven't been on much the last couple days so I didn't realize the parasite was coccidea. Glad to hear you silly Jose is feeling up to eating today!! Hope he keeps it up and gets well soon

If it is possible, i would move him to another cage setup and as far from the other as possible. You are dealing with a parasite that is really difficult to get rid of. Might want to talk to Jannb, she had the same issue

The only other cage I have is an 18x18x18.

The Albon has bad reactions on most chameleons and makes them very sick. It would take months for the coccidia to make him sick. You did say your vet said he was healthy at the visit so the not eating and looking thin is a side affect of the Albon.

I'm not sure how long he's had coccidia though. He's been looking thin for a while.

He's a young Cham right? So he couldn't have had it for long. They can live a long time with coccidia. Sometimes their body can even control cociddia.

He's 7 or 8 months I think. I was told he was 5 when I got him and I've had him since October.

Hey jann how do chameleons get this horrible parasite??? & is it contigious I mean if you have more than one chameleon in the same room but diff cages can one get it from the other?Thanks

What you are describing is side affects of albon not the coccidia parasite. Coccidia can be in your chams system for years and no sighns of illness will ever show. I have delt with coccida on a few of my wc chameleons and albon is not the way to go I lost 2 because of that stupid drug and it was not the parasite coccidia. I saved the other 2 by using ponazuril at a 60 mg/ml suspension.... It's the only safe drug IMO.... and jannb's cleaning and treating schedule she has done is the only thing that has worked for me. Also I would not feed him millworms see if he will take superworms they are way better then millworms. Hope this helps. O and if you are going to stay with albon I say he needs a whole lote of mistings way more then normal.

Your chameleon can get parasites including coccidia form the feeders that they eat. Say at the cricket farm a wild anole got in with the crickets to eat a few because he was hungry and he poops while in with the crickets and later the crickets eat the anole poop (crickets eat everything) and most wild anoles have all kinds of parasites. Then later you feed one of these crickets that's carrying the coccidia to your chameleon and your chameleon gets coccidian.

Coccidia is one of the more troublesome parasites to treat. It is highly contagious and if your cham comes into contact with anything that your infected cham has been on where he could have rubbed poop (branches, vines, plants and so forth) then he could catch coccidian. You could even pass it from touching one cham and not properly washing your hands before touching another. To me the cleanup it the worst part because hardly anything will kill coccidian.
