Turtle eye drops......good or bad???

Hi everyone,

I was involved in a discussion regarding turtle eye drops for chams and wondered what the negatives were. We were talking about these over the counter eye drops:

Repti Turtle Eye Drops (Zoo Med):

water (isotonic saline solution)
solubizing hyrotope
Vitamin A
palmlite in an oil base
cyanocobalamin (vitamin B12)

Could these cause damage if used on a cham with closed eyes.

Thanks,
Kevin

If you take the chameleon to the vet, you will be given a medication that is right for chameleons....and the vet will also be able to tell you what is going on with the eye.

If you treat the eye yourself you could do more damage than good...and you might make it impossible for the vet to get a good reading of what bacteria is involved.

The vet visit was suggested 4-5 times and I think they're getting a visit on Monday. The discussion started because a vet visit was at least 2 days away.

Someone stated that they'd heard horror stories about turtle eye meds and chams. That reminded me that I thought I heard something about it in the past. So now I just wondered if it was a rumor or fact.

Thanks for being concerned about the chams health.

Kevin

I used turtle eye drops before just watch out for cross contamination. Besides if you buy over the counter stuff I don't think theres any real drugs in them, read the bottle to be sure.
