Looks to me like an African Spur Thigh Tortoise or Geochelone sulcata.

Thanks Guys... THat is what I thought as well. Hey Robbie... time to start readin up and getting your yard ready for a permanent mower. lol

Mine don't dig at all (besides maybe burrowing into a corner a little bit), but mine also have hideboxes that are heated in the winter and cool retreats in the summer, so they don't really have a need to dig. I have friends in Phoenix that theirs will dig deep burrows and overwinter in them, coming out every few days for a bite to eat, but if they have controlled boxes (mostly heat in the winter) they won't really burrow much. I guess there's exceptions to the rule, but none of mine really burrow.

I don't have the exact ages on all of mine, but my oldest ones I think are no more than about my age (25-30) and my biggest female (22") is only about 12-15. Hard to say unless you raise them all yourself.

Do you have any pics of their adult enclosures? I am tossing around a few ideas on what to build. May just use the insulated shed we have out back now. :)

I wish I had seen this sooner! I had a couple of Sulcatas.. they ate me out of house and home, then finally someone stole them out of our backyard!!

I don't really have any good photos of the enclosures... The hideboxes can be as simple as a doghouse, anything really. I use doggy doors to prevent cold drafts from blowing through and they go in and out no problem. The houses don't need to be big, just enough that the torts can go in and stay warm in the cool winters. I use the Kane heat mats you can buy at LLLRep and also use a 150W ceramic heater during the coldest 2-3 months (when daytime highs aren't getting above 50).

Question, Tyler.. for the doggy doors.. how do they realize they are movable? Do they just realize it over time? This is a suggestion I'll have to pass on to my uncle.

I'm assuming many of them are clear, so they can see through and push. I was also thinking the type of clear thick plastic they use in large commercial coolers. That's what I may attempt in the shed. :)

Never thought about it that way. I'm just so used to seeing doggy doors that aren't clear... brainphhbttt.
