Hey everyone,

My chameleon Ezekiel passed 2 months ago in October, but since then it has been bugging me to make a post here.

I got Ezekiel from a reptile convention after a year of planning to cope with a bad hospital experience. My family was ready for a reptile and we had the time needed.

I started out with a small glass cage but shortly updated to a xxl repti breeze. Which he loved.

I spent a long time on the forums here. Posting and reading and making sure everything was right. I made frequent stops to the vet and took him in when anything seemed to be up (unlucky for me im very nervous with that stuff and I’m sure the vets knew my face)

Around September I noticed unusual habits, he’d started to rip up paper at the bottom of his cage and frequently visited and laid at the bottom of his cage. I posted and immediately took him to the vet after this.

He had a kidney infection that had spread around his entire body, causing it to be impossible for him to use the bathroom. He was bloated and dark but looked better when I picked him up.

He was put on 5 different medications, 2 for life and it hurt my heart.

After this I noticed him gaping, which I called the vet about. But later in the hour he was at the bottom of his cage and I knew his time was coming to an end.

I scooped him up and laid him on a towel and heating pad and watched him begin to pass, and he held my finger throughout.

Him passing like this brought a lot of comfort.

The vet bills were about five thousand dollars, but all of that was worth it.

We drove a while and got him cremated at this wonderful place. They gave us his handprints in clay, a bag, a certificate and his ashes in a beautiful box. The workers were so kind and patient. That experience made it easier.

It has felt like a dream to see an empty cage in my garage and that place that was once filled with a big cage, now empty and dull as we try to figure out what to move in replacement.

I couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful experience with Ezekiel. Even though the grief hasn’t gotten any better. I know that it would have also hurt to give him those medications everyday.

I miss him dearly. But wherever he is, he’s eating all the crickets and roaches he wants!

Thank you for all the comments, love and fun you all have given. It’s more support then I could’ve ever asked for.

I’m so sorry for your loss. I’m glad you were able to find some comfort during parts of it and were able to find such a beautiful way to remember him ❤️ take your time to grieve

Thank you so much for sharing with us. I am so glad you have hung on to those good memories. The bad ones will fade but keep those good ones close to your heart. i was so amazed at the connection and their personalities. Chameleons are facinating! Dont get rid of everything as i am of the belief that the universe provides. Until then, grieve and remember fondly! Its all about love!

I'm really sorry for lost and all things you and Ezekiel went through. At least you gave him a good life and when times heals all wounds you probably will give another one also a great life.
Take your time to grieve and keep him close in your heart, he's watching you from his cloud tree with big smile

I feel your pain and sorrow, and share it with you as I just last week had to say good night to my precious Groot.

I'm sure you provided Ezekiel his best and loved life, hence why he held your finger all the way till the end.

Ezekiel n Grot are now prob new buddies, hanging out in that amazing tree over the rainbow Bridge. 🌈
