Did you bake the sticks? I have several maple branches to saw into appropriate length sticks for my work in progress enclosure. I am debating baking or just spraying them with a broad spectrum cleaner and letting them sit for several days before attaching washers and screws on the ends to eventually be used with earth magnets in my screen cage.

I don't think it is a legal issue, just a logical one. You would then be able to repeat the entire process and save another $100. Now that's just good financial decision making right there!!!
