Strange looking panther egg

I could not get a good shot with the camera I have but I wanted to see if anyone has seen this. I have one egg out of the 23 in a clutch laid in Jan this year that looks like it has some yolk coming out of the top of the egg. Its a rubbery redish/orange little bulge The rest of the egg looks a like it has shrunk some but is not sweating and does not look like the ones I had hatch 1 1/2 months ago. Its still white and has not started molding or anything. The rest of eggs look fine. Any thoughts?

I was actually able to get a couple pretty good pics.

Yes, I have seen this. I think the neonate has died, and is now rotting... It happened to one of my panther eggs this last clutch. I just waited until it shriveled up before I completely gave up and buried it in the garden. I think the baby wasn't strong enough to open the egg and get out.

Sad. Sorry for your loss... :(

WAIT! Forget what I said up there!

Now I see the picture...! It doesn't look like mine did after all. Mine appeared to sweat like the rest when they get ready to hatch, but then just got "wetter and wetter" looking, darker, and never piped... except for a little puss hole that leaked this orange goo... It slowly shriveled up. But it was bright white and lovely like the rest until it got ready to hatch.

Yours looks like it is pushing the yolk sac out, or something. It still looks fresh and alive.

JMHO

I am hoping it is still alive. I will leave it and see what happens. Thanks for looking!

That looks like a bad infertile egg. The rest look great!

It may just be the pic but the eggs look like they aren't laying flat and they aren't in the bedding very deep.

Is there any sign of insects/maggots in the cage under any of the eggs? (If you lift one to cheque...be careful!)

Its not looking infertile to me...just odd that it would have split like that. Did you add water recently? Have any big temperature fluctuations in the last few days?

Could it be too wet and split - or was it laid like that? Maybe a bit of mommy flesh clinging to it (yuk). Id just wait and see. Never toss an egg unless it is moldy or shirvelled beyond hope and assuredly dead :)

Warrix642 - I dont ensure my eggs are laid flat and they hatch fine.

I have not added any water to that bin since I set it up in January. I did the sqeeze test with the vermiculit and thought I had it right. I'll check in there for bugs. I had not thought about that. If I do find bugs, what do you suggest? Should I setup a new egg bin and transfer the eggs?

When I dug them up I was following something I had heard about dont change the position of the eggs because the membrane could be torn. i put them into the verm as close to the position they were in in the pile after she laid them. Probably a little too picky but I wanted to give them the best chance I could..

That happened to several in a clutch I had. I broke one open and there was only yolk in the egg. I just figured that it was infertile. Not all the eggs were infertile, most of them in the clutch hatched very nicely.

I checked the egg bin and there is no sign of bugs or maggots so should be good.

Bocajan, good to hear that most of your clutch was ok. So far this is the only egg to look bad. The rest are growing nicely. I am thinking (actually hoping) another month. But they never hatch when you are completely ready. Guess I'll find out soon enough.

Thanks everyone!

I am dealing with the same exact issue. The clutch is due to hatch any day now, so I assumed it was okay. It has been over a week though and I wonder if I should remove it or let it be ? I'll be patient and see what happens.

Good luck Reptoman.
