Sprained Ankle

My Chameleon, Yoshi, Somehow sprained his ankle recently. I thought I would shared this plight with everyone. I noticed him yesterday walking around his cage yesterday (100g) not using his back left leg to its full potential... so I took a closer look. It was clearly swollen. I had gone through broken legs before with a revious cham, so I took him to a vet (who is not a herp specialist but still looks after them) right away. I requested xrays, nothing is broken, thank god.. and bone density actaully looks great! There is defintely something wrong though. The vet said he didnt want to splint something so small, and since he was still using it partially that it would be best (hopefully) to let it heal. Any input? I have put him in a smaller cage, and wont change his diet since it seems to be working... poor little guy.

suggestion

I would limit his movement, that and try to keep him off of the sprained ankle. I do not know if you would increase minerals or vitamins during this type of incident. Maybe someone else can jump in. good luck

from his knee down it looks like his other leg, and ive been watching him - he's being smart about resting it, and using his tail to support his walking. he has about 15 crickets dusted with ca Mon, Wed, Fri (with d3 on Fri) and multi-vitamin on tue, thurs, sat.

well he showed me the x-ray, i was pretty worried/wanting answers. bones were in place, and there was nothing but swelling really

Well it looks like gout to me, but im not a vet let alone a herp vet. I had this happen to my first veiled over 10-15 years ago when I was a young and I cried my eyes out for a couple of days. It was my dads fault telling me they dont like the way cal dust taste so I should not dust. Great advice Dad. Maybe we can get him to chime in. He has a veiled now. Offspring of mine of course(He is on proper dusting schedule:D)

whether is MBD or gout, whatever, I dont want to waste time waiting to see how it turns out - or it time heals a sprain. I''ll see what I can do.

Wonder if he still has those x-rays

mbd and gout are 2 different things. The first signs of gout are swelling. Wish I would have know this years ago. If the bone density is good, it is not mbd.

well i know what MBD is.. im just not up for taking ANY chances and sitting around, and like the vet said, do nothing. :)

jannb...gout is the result of a build up of uric acid. The uric acid forms crystals and that causes inflammation which causes swelling and results in pain.

What would cause a cham to have this build up?

Gout in chameleons can be caused by feeding pinky mice on a constant basis or crickets that have been gut loaded solely with high protein foods like cat or dog food.
