They're often like that - when your hand is in their cage, you're a threat, when he and your hand are out either a) he knows he's in your power and is resolutely making the best of it or b) he forgets you exist as anything more than Something to Climb On (and a comparatively warm Something at that).
Handsome little guy!

oh yeah...what does it mean if they lick you?....it wasnt a big lick..he just stuck his tongue out and kinda tasted us....

They're checking to see if they can taste chameleon on you. They have glands on the side of their face, and will occasionally rub their faces on things/people/etc. as they march around, and they'll taste to see if they've been there before, or if any other cham has. I've seen Thaxter lick as frequently as every two or three feet as he marches along.

i figured it had something to do with that.....thats interesting....i have another question...when he is in his enclosure he is dark most of the day...his temps are fine.....but once he was out he was really colorful and seemed calm after awhile....i thought when they are dark they are stressed out.....but ppl say when they are colorful they are fired up or something...was he mad?

There are rest colors which can be colorful, basking colors which are often darker to help absorb heat better, and fired up colors which are when he is upset or something similar. There are other things like sleep colors and what not, but those three specifically pertain to you, so...

To add to the "color-coding" discussion - fired-up chams are usually showing their best and brightest colors, but will usually also have the gular crest (region under the throat) inflated and be inflated top to bottom (scaring away the predator or rival/impressing the ladies with how big and beautiful they are). The picture in you avatar looks fired-up and displaying. If he seems otherwise calm and placid and doesn't have the throat inflated, I would guess those are just his default colors for the moment. He's not fired up in the two pix you posted in this thread, and doesn't look particularly stressed.

Lookin good! That's how Jasmine is. She tries to take my hand off if I put it in her cage, but as soon as I get her out, she's like oh this is fine and calms down. Although sudden movements do make her try to strike lol.
