Slight difference between his eyes

Ohhh ok maybe because he was chilling out under his uvb light. But he has a good appetite and eats whenever I give him his food. although I have seen him close that one eye but not both at the same time and he does rub it on his branches sometimes.
Ok so closing eyes during the day is a totally different situation and can be serious... This can be due to many things such as supplements, something in the eye, incorrect UVB lighting distance, and illness. So this is where we go to the next step... Which is asking you to fill out the help form. If you want further feedback please fill out the help form and be very detailed with your response. Please also attach an image of the entire enclosure lighting down so we can see if anything stands out.

Ever since I’ve got him I noticed he’ll briefly close his one eye, I have never seen the other one closed and I don’t think he closes both of them at the same time because when I try to see if the other one is closed it’s usually not and he opens them back up cause he sees me. So I’m not sure if maybe he’s got an eye problem or something idk

  • Feeding - What are you feeding your cham? What amount? What is the schedule? How are you gut-loading your feeders? Super worms, horn worms, black soldier fly larvae, crickets, silkworms I give him 3-5 every other day cause he kinda fat now Definitely watch how you feed him, I recommend 3-4 every other day and once he’s nearing 1 years old (which is in a couple months!) start reducing to 2-3 feeders every other day or every two days.(Appropriately sized, gutloaded, and dusted) Supers and hornworms are treats so only two when you do feed them and only 2-3 times a week. I recommend you lay off the treats for a while since you said he’s getting kinda fat 😂. Do you weigh him? Gutload your feeders as well.

Thank you I’m trying to make sure I have everything how it should be for him hahah, what are the small changes tho? But yeah I probably should since it’s been going on for a while. If my local vets office takes chameleons would that be good enough or would I need to find someone that specializes in reptiles? Cause it shouldn’t be do difficult to figure out what might be wrong and specialist are probably mad expensive hahaha

Expand the thing. I do recommend you add more foliage! Yes he needs a vet that’s experienced in chameleons, your vet probably doesn’t know much on his care so I don’t recommend it. Check ups run around $60+ and fecals $40+ (Based on vets I called when I was searching) Depending on what the problem is (if any) then the money prices vary from there. Well if the vet doesn’t know anything about chameleons than it can be difficult, their knowledge and whatever they would prescribe or say is the problem may not be accurate or safe. Do you think I can see a picture of the entire enclosure?

Just some clarification on your review for @Ruethechameleon (my responses will be in blue):

I recommend you lay off the treats for a while since you said he’s getting kinda fat 😂. Do you weigh him? Gutload your feeders as well. Your schedule and amount is good. Do you weigh him to see if he’s gaining, losing, or staying at a constant weight? Also completely cut out the hornworms and superworms until he loses the weight. What do you gutload with? The gutload (make sure everything is in the correct ratios) and feeder (stick to the staples until he loses weight) charts @cruz.m attached are great! Variety is best for both feeders and gutload ingredients!
  • Supplements - What brand and type of calcium and vitamin products are you dusting your feeders with and what is the schedule? Repti calcium w/o d3 6x a week Repti calcium with d3 once every other week and reptivite vitamin once every other week Is your Zoo Med Reptivite the with D3 or without D3 version?

Looks normal nothing out of the ordinary and I’ve had him tested for parasites and he didn’t have any How many fecals were checked? Is your vet experienced with chameleons? Has he ever gotten x-rays or bloodwork before?
  • History - Any previous information about your cham that might be useful to others when trying to help you. No If you go to the vet which I recommend, get a fecal done too! Just in case
Cage Info:
  • Cage Type - Describe your cage (Glass, Screen, Combo?) What are the dimensions? 2 ft wide and 4ft tall screen enclosure Could you attach a photo of his full cage- lights to bottom, please? I swear you had a pic of it on this thread but cannot find it!
  • Lighting - What brand, model, and types of lighting are you using? What is your daily lighting schedule? 75 watt basking light and a 20in t5 linear uvb light 5.0 What are the brands of the linear fixture and UVB bulb? How far away are his UVB and heat bulbs away from his basking branch? How old is his UVB bulb?
  • Temperature - What temp range have you created (cage floor to basking spot)? Lowest overnight temp? How do you measure these temps? Basking: 85 floor:70 dials and a temperature gun That’s the max amount he should get basking, most keepers keep them at 80°-82°F max 85° That‘s really more for male veileds. With male panthers, their basking temp should be around 85*F, if your cham is too hot, lower the temp by a degree at a time until it gets to the temp he likes, and if he is too cold, you can raise one degree at a time, but only to 86-87*F MAX! Also, it is crucial in how you measure basking temps to make sure he isn’t getting too much heat! If you aren’t already, measure his basking temp with a digital thermometer with a probe, and place the probe where his casque/top of his back is when he’s on his basking branch. What do you mean by dials? What are his overnight temps?
  • Humidity - What are your humidity levels? How are you creating and maintaining these levels? What do you use to measure humidity? 50%-60% and I have humidifier that keeps it at 55-60% and I have a hygrometer Do you use the humidifier during the day? Usually they’re used at night to keep humidity up. When do you use the humidifier (they can only be used in the coldest parts of the night and only if it gets below 68*F max, preferably lower)? Is it a whole-room one or a cage one? Is it cool-mist or something different? How often and how do you clean it (and any tubes and accessories used if it came with any)? Daytime levels are perfect at 50-60%. Nighttime levels can get up to 100% if you have proper airflow. Is your hygrometer digital, and where is it placed in his cage (I like to have 3 digital thermometer-hygrometer combos in my cages, one up top near the basking branch, one in the middle, and one at the bottom, to get more info for my ambient temps and humidity levels)?
  • Plants - Are you using live plants? If so, what kind? Pony tail palant and a ficus benjimina Definitely add more foliage Is Do you use any moss vines or moss dowels, or any Exo Terra vines in your cage? The two plant chants @cruz.m posted are great!
  • Placement - Where is your cage located? Is it near any fans, air vents, or high traffic areas? At what height is the top of the cage relative to your room floor? Not near fans or vents and he’s in my room and I do school there but I try to sit where he can’t see me cause I have a shower curtain on 3 sides on the cage.

Current Problem - The current problem you are concerned about. Closing one eye I recommend taking him to an experienced chameleon vet! Agree! Make sure the vet you choose is very knowledgeable and experienced with chameleons, especially since he’s had it since you got him and because it’s an eye issue!

Also, have you ever read through The Chameleon Academy before? If not, definitely do so! Make sure to read through every module and the panther species profile, as well as listen to as many podcasts as, they have the most accurate and up-to-date info!

I don’t appreciate your sarcasm 🙄
It wasn't sarcasm. Like most everyone else, I don't see anything wrong either.
I agree that you're overthinking it, and I was trying to lighten things up a bit.

From subsequent discussion, IF there's a problem (which I'm not sure there is) it could be a bit of debris in the conjunctive sac—most likely the one that appears slightly bulged, or the skin slightly tighter.

This is very common in chameleons, and usually resolves itself within a few days or less. If not, the first thing I'd try is misting more frequently for a couple days (offset by shorter duration) to give him more opportunity to hydrate and resolve on his own.

If it persists for more than a week—or worsens—I'd consider having it looked at.

This has come up quite a few times in the archives.

1. I gut load with collard or carrots and I’ve been trying to stick to staple feeders right now and since fly larvae are small I’ll give him 5 cause that probably equals like 4 crickets hahah. But I don’t weight him I don’t have a scale for that.

2. The reptivite is without d3 since he has a d3 supplement already.

3. ive gotten just one fecal test done and I’ve only had him with me for almost 3 months hahah so no x-rays or blood work have been done I haven’t had that many problems hahaha.

4. Here is the cage from lights down 9D9B5AD3-9855-434C-A257-C973445FBF65.jpeg
5. He has a basking branch for the basking bull and has a branch under the uvb light he liked to sit under too, the uvb is like 7inches below it. And the brand is zoo med and it like 3 months old

6.I have a dial that’s in the middle of the cage to see the temps and the temperature at night is 67-69°

7.depending on the day I leave it in during the day but I have it in at night. It’s a warm mist and it’s outside of his cage but my room is fairly large so it’s hard to get it higher then 70% at night. I clean it once a week and I just follow the directions that came with it. The hygrometer is a dial and it’s in the middle of his cage.

8.no I don’t have fake vines and things in his cage.

Ok thank you lol hes always seemed to itch his right eye and close it once an a while since I got him so idk if he’s got an issue with his eye or something

They have a vet that treats chameleons and reptiles there so maybe she’ll be able to idk like it’s not just a dog a cat vet that I will bring my chameleon too hahaha.
But yeah sure and I know my ficus is struggling quite a bit so I think I’ll get a new one or something different once my greenhouses open 😭 9A6C1557-4659-402D-83CE-CB81EA5DD0F3.jpeg

So your going to need plant lighting... Ficus will struggle at first they do not like to be messed with and move. They sometimes will drop all leaves before they settle.

Any plastic in the bottom you want to remove. This is risky for a chameleon in case they crawl between it. The exo terra black vine has to go. These are high risk for pieces coming off which is a common issue for chams and eyes since they will rub on their branches.

When you mist is he awake? I ask because panthers can sometimes be more open to actually cleaning their eyes when you mist. If he has something in the eye and has not been able to clean the eye this can be an issue for him removing it.

Oh ok, yes definitely needs more foliage. Remove the exo terra vines the coating comes off easy and if your cham were to rub its eyes it’d get in his eyes. I think you should remove the plastic, you can get a feeder/make one and attach it to one of the walls, also you may need a grow light for the plants especially the ficus. This is just an idea.

@ Beman beat me to it

Ahh yeah I’ll probably get something different then a ficus and I have the plastic covering the plant so the water from the dripper won’t kill it but I’ll remove it and keep the bowls to catch the water cause if I don’t my plant will die or I’ll end up with a flood on the bottom of the cage everyday hahah.

And I put that branch in there breifly because I need to go get some more branches to put on the bottom and he doesn’t really climb on it anyway which’s is good.

and I mist 30 minutes after his lights go on and an hour before they go off. So he’s awake when I mist.

Thank you! What are good ways to attach the plants to the sides of the cage because the lattice is kinda flimsy and won’t support plant pots? But I use the bowls to catch the water from the dripper, he doesn’t eat from them or go near them hahaha I hand feed him instead

How does he react to the mist? Does he hide from it or stay put like he wants to be misted? How long are you misting for each time?
