Severe Weather/Heat Wave

So last night a crazy wind/thunderstorm swept through my town in KY. Literally every other tree is broken in half. Almost all neighborhoods were left without power. Our power went on and off about 10 times last night. Luckily it didn't go out completely, but our internet/cable did.

Many trees landed and tore apart power lines all over town. A giant tree landed on one behind my house, but I didn't realize it until this morning. Apparently a neighbor called the power company and they shut our electric off to work on it. We were without electricity from 1-8 PM.

I had Loki inside for a bit and he seemed confused. He couldn't figure out why all of the lights were out in the middle of the day. He didn't try to sleep at all. I was even more concerned because I had just fed him. So after about an hour, I took him outside. His temp gauge was reading 100 so I put him in the coolest spot and stayed with him. He ended up holding his mouth open (so was I) and I took him back in. He went without heat/UVB all afternoon. By the time the lights came on, it was lights out for him.

I know he will most likely be fine, but I'm still worried. At the very least, his whole schedule will be screwed up. I tried my best to make sure he was comfortable today. Inside it was too cold, outside it was too hot. I ultimately decided cooler was better, and hoped he would sleep through some of it. I guess I'm just posting for assurance. I'm sure some of you have been through much worse.

he should be fine! Don't worry!!!

Thanks Carol! Thank god it was only for today.

What are we supposed to do in a situation like that? My friends power is going to be out for a few days and she has 2 Leo's and 16+ snakes, amongst other animals. How long without heat could a Chameleon go without things getting too serious? The only option for heat (that I can think of) would be a heat pack. Which wouldn't do much of anything in a cage. I would like to be prepared for the next time.

Without heat in the summer is not as bad as without heat in the winter. They will be fine for a few days if temps are a little cooler than normal and they can't bask. It's not ideal, but it's not life threatening. Long term would be incompatible but they go through periods of storms out in the wild where they don't see sun for a few days or more and they're just fine. What I worry about is when we lose power in the summer and the house actually gets too hot! Without a/c my house gets too hot very quickly.

This is my panther in heat stress from being outside when it was too hot for only 15 minutes or so:

Glad your house and you are okay!
