Rust colored stains on cage bottom

Awhile back ago I noticed that my chams poop causes a rust colored stain on the cvpvc bottom of the cage that doesn't scrub off. Since it has done that from day 1 it has never concerned me. Today, however, my son asked me about it and being unable to answer why it was their, I decided to ask if this is abnormal. My first thought was rust in the water, but since we use distilled water that is not likely. The cage is all aluminum so it cannot be from their either. Is this possibly a sign of something wrong with his diet? Has anyone else seen this?

My chams tend to leave a grey color were their poop drops. Although I do wipe it off daily it will leave that spot until I do a weepy clean with 40 volume peroxide. Most of them will come off at that time.

Do you use Repashy Calcium Plus?

I had thought the same thing as you, even though my Cham's poop was nowhere near the rust/orange stains. Well I figured it out!

The Calcium Plus has those little red dots in them. They remind me of red strawberry seeds or something. Lol. Well when some of the dust or a cricket fell on a wet spot, it would leave the orange stain.

You could have an entirely different issue all together, but if you do use that supplement, that is most likely the culprit.

is your chameleons urate(the pee part which should be white) orange? Maybe that is what looks like rust. If so, he needs more hydration then.

Mine have always done it, they always leave light orangish stains on the floor of the cage. Since I've had different plants in the past I always thought it was due to the tannins in the leaves that fall, especially if they sat there for a couple days. But now I keep my floors bare and don't use plants that really shed leaves, so it's the poop.

I haven't done so yet because I've been busy but sometime this week I want to take out all the PVC bottoms and give them a good cleaning with bleach to see if I can restore the whiteness. Or does the peroxide seem to work better?

Olivia I am allergic to bleach so I use the peroxide. It has worked on all but one stain.

Yep Repashy calcium plus is the best way to go as far as I am concerned.
