Roaches, Good or Bad or in the Middle?

Chase

Chameleon Enthusiast
Hello!

I was looking into trying to get another feeder so my lizards can have a varitey of food. I was wondering if they were good feeders as too Crickets and Superworms? Also, how is their care? Easy or hard, I need some advice, also what type of Roach is good? Pictures will also be helpful. How do I breed them and do they have to be on a heat pad? Umm also, I would also like to see enclosures and anyone who wants too. Just PM me and I'll PM questions.

Thanks all!!

Thanks! I just thought of that but I already posted the Thread. But if anyone wants to post the info still I appreciate it!

I have Dubia, they are great. I am still working on a colony. Thanks to Ponders I have a few more females! I have a lot of nymphs running around... but I have been kinda feeding off the medium sized dubia I have.

The cool thing you will find when you search... is that they give live birth and are cleaner and less smelly than crickets. once you have a good colony going your set, no more crickets!

They give live birth?!?!?!?! WOW! Thats awesome!!! I will love these things. Do they have more Meat to Shell Ratio to like a Cricket? The babies, are they small enough to feed to Pygmies?

Thanks,

I think they could be small enough... They are about a 1/4" or so. My cham Jake loves roaches. Fred hasn't really tried them, he likes to knock of his food dish over and I don't like roaches running loose. As far as how nutritious they are compared to crickets, I am not 100%. I leave that to your searching. I just know they are fine to feed as a staple.

roaches

the meat:shell ratio is superior to crickets. takes less roaches to fill your cham's belly as well. I recommend dubia. Roach care is similar to cricket care only with more humidity and heat, but you won't have half of your roaches die off in a week unlike crickets. Theyre survivors. Don't know of anyone that ships to Florida tho, it's against state law. Theyre just as easy to gutload too. If you're iffy about your cham eating roaches, use cup feeding, tends to work well with feeding roaches to chams.

That sucks.... I am sure someone could slip some in...

Just so ya know, Dubia don't infest like house roaches do. They breed when you give them what they need, but once they get out they usually die off unless they find the right conditions. I just make sure I keep an extra eye out when I am handling them.

Don't know that i'd risk getting a heft fine trying to get feeders for my lizard. I'm sure someone would ship to Florida, I personally will not and I know just about every online business won't. It's not 100% true to say that they don't infest your house, especially in Florida. That is why roaches are banned from there.... Last time I was in Florida there were roaches running around everywhere, so I'm sure they've had problems with infestations... It's not just roaches like Lobster Roaches and Turkistans that are banned from Florida, It's ALL roaches including Hissers which doesn't surprise me. All types of exotic animals thrive in the warm and humid weather in Florida because it stays that way year round, especially in Southern Florida. Being that theyre roaches, i'm sure they'll thrive as good as the fire ants and exotic bees (killer bees? Not sure if that's what they are can't quite recall).

good enough for me...

i have to convince my parents that they are okaty but i still have to let my veiled grow a bit so he can eat them. another reason i might not feed them to him because in his wild habitat he would not eat roaches as would those native to Madagascar.

But your Cham isn't living on a tropical island. It is living in a cage in your house ;) It won't hurt to have some variety in their food.

My 5 month old Veiled loves roaches as well. I bought some this past weekend at the local reptile show and asked the seller to get the "smallest ones possible" for me. I don't want my cham to choke on the larger ones. Baron snatches them as soon as I put them in the feeder cup.

What native Middle Eastern bugs are you planning to feed him?

Two things:

There are roaches on the Arabian Peninsula.

dubia are from South America.

Adding on to what Brad said, THERE ARE ROACHES EVERYWHERE and that includes Yemen. There are roaches in nearly every biome on the earth, probably with the exception of Tundra and Taiga biomes. Veileds love roaches just as much as the next cham. I have 3 chameleons and all 3 willingly eat roaches as a staple. They do enjoy their crickets and supers now and again, but roaches are always the "entree"

just as a piece of advise, not EVERY chameleon loves roaches.
just like some abhores silkworms.
test try it first b4 deciding to breed them.
feed your cham dubia for couple of days and see if he likes them.

Considering that he can't bring in any roaches, what about if he traps some of his own (Florida) ones gutsload them for a while and tries to breed them? Would that work? Or are they too contaminated with other stuff already?
