I went into a pet store inside a mall yesterday and was shocked. The reptiles were so poorly kept it was very upsetting. They had a bunch of different types of frogs being kept in tiny fish bowls without water dishes or hides...just dirt. There was one frog in particular that got my attention, he was labeled as a "pixie frog." My husband put up a good fight telling me we dont need any more pets (which is probably true.)
I went home disappointed...I guess it was pretty bad because by the next day my husband agreed to let me keep just ONE MORE frog. Upon arrival at the pet store I asked to see this frog before buying him. He was so dried out that touching him was like touching a bearded dragon. He did not move, and he could not open his eyes. I asked for a dish of water and submerged the frog. He was so weak he would not hold his head out of the water so I held it for him.
His face and back were covered in dry dirt and dead crickets so I used my finger to wipe his face clean.
After a few minutes of wiping his face and holding up his head his skin split and he began to shed...thats when he opened his eyes for the first time...and started moving his limbs.
I spoke with the manager and explained the frogs poor condition. He told me he got this frog from another store that had recently closed down. They had no information or its history or even what species it is. The "reptile expert" who was not working today (good thing or I would have been really stern with him) said it was a pixie. I informed him that it looked more like a Budgett's Frog which from what i know about them...are semi aquatic. Can you imagine? A semi aquatic frog living in dry dirt with no water?
Anyways after talking the manager he said that if I wanted to save it then i could have it for $20. Im not sure what they are worth but I am happy I did not have to pay an arm and a leg to get a sick frog.
I am happy to report that he is in his new 20gallon 3/4 aquatic aquarium. He has not come out of the water for about 6 hours now! Does anyone out there keep these frogs?
