red or blue barred ambilobe?

my ambanja x ambilobe male, has a blue and light green body, with dark blue/purple stripes on the body, and towards the tale its complete red stripes. i was wondering if there was a way to tell if hes a red or blue barred ambilobe.

They are labeled by how they look, their is no real rules on defining a red or blue bar, or purple bar for that matter. If it looks like they have red bars people call them a red bar and if it appears that they have blue bars...blue bar, it is not saying that it is a specific area within the locale (even though certain areas of each locale do have certain traits and colors). A blue bar ambilobe can have both blue and red bar offspring and red bar ambilobes can have have both red and blue bar offspring. Hope this helped.

I have a similar question so I will just add it to this thread....if thats ok

I have a blue barred ambilobe and just recently got limited info on his sire from the breeder. When his father fires up he is nearly all red, with white, orange shades and just a touch of blue, all the pictures of blue barred I have seen are far more blue and green.

The breeder says that my cham will start to color up the same by around 18 months but at the moment he is definately blue, green, lime and orange.

Would his sire be a red barred? I cant seem to get anymore info on his lineage.

Clearly he is neither a red or a blue bar Ambilobe. He is a cross Ambanja/Ambilobe. You can't wish the Ambanja part of him away.

Bluegeorge, first off he will not "start" to color up at 18 months, normally they are fully colored up at a year old and their colors can slightly change as they age. But at a year old you know exactly what they are. Also, I found that it also depends on the females lineage what your offspring look like. Many of us look at past offspring of the dame to see what kind of producer she is, then we pair her up with a male of the similar traits. And even then there are sometimes exceptions where you can have blue bar lineage from the female and male and still get an oddball red bar. So to answer your question, you cannot be 100% certain that he will end up just like the sire, but more than not they do.

I'm going to have to agree with Harry here. If he's a cross,then he's a cross, no matter what he may look like.

Genetics are a really interesting topic. It's quite common for the offspring to look similar to the Sire, but almost always not Identical. The Dame definitely has a part in the genetics in the offspring.

Exactly D...the majority of the time the look similar to the sire, but there are always some. In my opinion that is how you become a reputable breeder, know what you are producing and producing them constantly and healthily. The reputable breeders know what their dames produce either by past clutches or by bloodlines. But anyways...normally they look similar to the sire but you can't be 100%, just have to wait and hope the breeder know what they are doing. That just my opinion.
