Puffing Up Noise

Had my 4 month Panther Nosy Be for over a week now and hes doing fine BUT today I held him close to me and heard a weird breathing sound, he puffed up his chest too, is that a normal sound to hear or not? Im rather paranoid about these things.

I bought him from a breeder whos bred them for 15-20 years and they gave me a medium sized plastic tank with the top cut out and put netting over the top for ventilation. Hes under a UV tube which is about 8cm away from the top id say and then theres a heat bulb not on top but away which heats up the other tank which his is in to roughly 78-84F, spray 3 sides of the enclosure and leaves in the morning and the early evening. He has a handful of small hoppers which are dusted with calcium+d3 everyday and nutrobal every friday. Hes sleeping fine and climbing around fine too. Hes not dehydrated. Seems to enjoy coming out and climbing up my arms too.

Any help would be appreciated please. Shall try get a photo up of him when i can.

hehe, I was worried about the same thing. it sounds like sneezing without the body movements. like a huff, like he's exhaling really fast, right? If that is the sounds your hearing its him hissing, Nothing major, just that he's not as comfortable as you would want him to be and since youve only had him a week this is perfectly normal ;-) Hope that helps, there are loads of things on this forum about how to make your chameleon feel more comfortable being handled - main one being associating your hand with food, if you can hand feed 1 piece of food to start off with your onto a winner and gradually build it up! I always give him treats (not crickets or locust) from my hand, then when I put my hand in his cage he come straight over to me :) so be sure to search through that. And post us some photos :)

Thanks, im pretty sure thats what hes doing then, the chest kinda does a slight puff up too. I am just worried about it because my last female had a lump in her throat and also the shop we bought her from gave us false info on how to look after her so i think she got RI :( was horrible as she passed away in my hands. Hoping my little Damien will get bigger and be all healthy. Does the looking after sound okay too btw? Read so many different things about it.

Congratulations on little Damien. Using calcium with d3 daily is too much. Can you change that to plain calcium without d3 for daily use. Nutrabol contains d3 and multivits and using it once a week is fine. I use Komodo cricket dust but there are many out there. Welcome to the forum. I hope you will enjoy it here.:)

Thanks, i posted a photo of him on here, its a bit confusing atm but sure ill get used to it. I think Chameleons are just fascinating!! I can use it without, i use it without for my millipede. Have a huge selection of insects aswell.
Thanks for welcoming me too.

That's good. He will need the nutrabol once a week as well. What inscects have you got? Popeye is a fussy B . I can't get past the locusts and crickets. I've tried calciworms , Dubais, silkworms. I have 0ver 700 silkie eggs in the fridge. I have decided he will eat them when I take them out to hatch.Lol:D

If you hear this noise and there is discharge from the nostrils, this could be a problem. I don't mean one time, as my guy has done this once when he got some water drops on his face. You may see bubbles coming from the nostrils and a puffing of the body and throat area. If this is the case, and it continues, it could be a sign of respiratory problems. I will admit, it is most likely hissing to show you who is boss, but you want to be sure!!!

He seems fine its just puffs his chest up but no discharge or anything tbh, hes really lively too when hes on a mission. But shall keep an eye on him and if looks any different or anything i shall get him straight down the vets!!

Ok so my insects i have a train millipede, red head centipede,6 assassin bugs(more incubating too),2 madagascan hissing cockroach,3 headlight cockroach and more unknown ones,4 fruit beetles,violin/indian rose mantis, egyptian mantis, peacock mantis and then 2 green anoles, green tree frog,4 chickens and a fire bellied newt :) so tbh quite alot.

Oh my god. I'm going to have nightmares. Took me ages to pluck up the courage to order roaches.:D:D:D

Roaches are cool!!! The hissers are only small. Funnily enough i can hear the roaches just scuttling around atm.I just forgotm i have an imperial scorpion too, hes kinda scary to hold tbh. But still do hold him.
