Prolapse

I just bought an absolute beauty from the White Plains show. Male and female panther and they spent the entire day mating. The next day, the were still in the same cage but not mating, i noticed he had something really really big sticking out of his you know what. I realized it was a prolapse of some sort but i had no experience with this. I did know it was serious and to keep it moist. Anyway i called the vet who told me to use KY jelly on it to keep it moist and bring him in. Shortly after i got there and before the vet saw him, it went in by itself. I figured i should have him checked anyway so we saw the doc. He said it was probably a hemipenal prolapse caused by mating all day Sunday and then still being excited by having her still in his cage on Monday am. and to call him if it happened again. Which it hasn't yet. Does that sound right to everybody? Or should i worry that something more might be wrong? He is my best looking panther yet with the personality to match. He is a sunburst redbar from what i can tell. The owner said he was a red bar ambilobe.

take him out of the shared cage and put him out of sight
so that he can't see the female.

mating shouldn't last "all day" in a single session.
I know how much it can hurt after a 4 hours straight.
it's better if he connect a few times.
either way the female should reject him after she's had her fill.
and as well all know... an ANGRY female isn't sexy
and makes Mr Happy ... hide... ;)

I pict would REALLY help a lot in this.

I've had young animals with prolapses
it should be easy to tell what it is that's er,... extended.
If his back is arched... he's likely still way too excited being around her.
spray him down with some water
chill him out and see if everything retracts.

IF it's deemed a prolapse
I would also use glycerin... to coat the area.
it's hygroscopic and will pull fluids out of swollen tissues,
shrinking them and allowing reinsertion with a de-cottoned and rounded q-tip.
before more drastic measures are considered.

It was a prolapse of some sort, but the doc didn't get to see it because it went in just before we went in to see him. It didn't seem to be a penis of any kind. It was like a big red ball of some sort. It seemed to have 3 seperate pieces to it and some red mixed in, not blood though. I didn't take a pic, if it happens again i will. The doc said it is hard to tell what kind of prolapse it was without seeing it. And they mated just about all day, but it was numerous times, then they both went to their seperate sides and seemed to ignore each other so i thought they would be ok till i got their cages set up. As soon as i got home he went into his own cage and out of sight from her. I am just a little worried because the doc said it is much simplier if it was a hemipenal prolapse instead of anything else. He also said they kind of all look the same unless you seperate them and really look. I don't know because this is the first time it has happened. But from the way you were talking it seems it probably was. Right?

yea he shouldnt have been able to breed with her that long , its like a pulled muscel but coming outa your buttox and its very painful, all they do though is take him in and they will either stuff it back in if the tissue is good and if not they will cut it but you kept it moist so a tuck and wrap and a stitch woulda been all he needed to come back home just all yea gota do know is just keep an eye on his for the next 2 weeks and if anything is going to happen it will in that time period but sounds like you had your fella in there in a heart beat so he should recover very quickly

Ya, i couldn't have gotten there any faster without getting a ticket. I think i noticed it just about as it happened, immediately got vaseline on it, and left for the vets. He had to mate with her at least 5-6 times that i know of, and that was only the times that i was looking. We were actually at the show and i saw him mating just before i purchased him. Once we bought him and put them in our cage they were continually attracting attention because they continued to do it throughtout the day. He had a very good day. We had a customer say "He knows more positions then I do". I couldn't believe she kept on letting him. But i was right there keeping an eye on her for any signs of stress, which she never showed, she just went on her side and he stayed on his. I don't think he could do it anymore. And yes, it looked really painful. When i called my hubby, he said "Just push it back in", but i was worried i would do more harm then good. But thanks i will keep a close eye on him for the next couple of weeks. Thanks everyone!!!!!

Boy after all this , i should probably show you a pic of this beauty huh?
