Power Outages

Hello everyone.

My area is about to get hit with a really bad snowstorm, and they are predicting power outages for several days after. I really have no idea what to do about heating for my reptiles. I've never had to deal with this problem before. In addition to my chameleon, I also have five frogs and two leopard geckos. I think the frogs might be fine, but I know the geckos won't be able to stand the cold. Does anyone have any ideas?

Only thing i can think of is.... Go buy a generator, and a bunch of gas.

You could buy a day or two w heat packs and styro shipping containers while praying for heat to return. You can always drive to reheat packs and they should be at every hardware store.

I didn't even think of heat packs. I think I might do that. I live in a city, so it (hopefully) won't be too bad. Thanks guys!

I think those camper heat packs are an excellent idea.

Note that they can usually be recharged by putting them in boiling water.

A bbq could be very useful for many things, including recharging heat packs. Of course, if you can't stay outside to light a fire, that might not be a helpful comment.

good question,im also about to be hit by hurricane sandy,i did buy a fda approved for home use propane heater and stocked up on some worms...but how long can chams go without their lights?

Well how are you gonna keep yourself warm? As long as you can heat your house you should be ok. Two weeks at room temperature should be fine assuming your animals are healthy adults to begin with. Same goes for UV, especially if you have fresh vitamins with D3. Sometimes the worst thing for a chameleon is a nervous owner

If you can't heat your house you have bigger problems to worry about and I can recommend some great reptile meat recipies

I think they can easily go a week without UVB but it would be good if they just get some LIGHT every day to keep their internal clock working right. So, hopefully you can put them near a window during the day so they can get that distinction between day and night.

i will have heat,and i do supplement..yes im nervous as being hit with a flood last september and had to leave my home in in a hurry...

I live in NW north Dakota have the same issues... I heard if chams don't have adequate heat they will go into hibernation? Anyone know if that's true
