Poked in the brain

So, i have a Meller's chameleon, and while handling him the other day i noticed that he has small 'soft spots' on top of his head, just in front of his flaps:

In the above picture, the bits im talking about are the small pair of mounds between the eyes and flaps on top of the head.

When you touch them, they are very very soft and smooth, and his flaps wiggle when you stroke them. Sometimes his eyes move around too, if you touch them.

Just wondering, but what on earth are they? It seems like his skull just stops there, and im poking him in the brain, but im doubting thats what it is. It is very strange though. Anyone with any knowledge of chameleon anatomy have any ideas what they are?

Those pads are a fat/water storage area. When protruding like they are on the one in your picture its good.

dito! both Henry and Lenny have nice fat pads (my two WC melleri). My two CH melleri, Pat and the new guy are kinda small to really get a good idea.

I can't find any good pics of Lenny's fat pads... and for some reason when I went to take a pic of him just now he spazzed out at the cam... so I don't wanna bother him right now.

you can see in the pics that it is normal. Reptile skulls are (usually)much more lightly built than mammalian skulls. They have all sorts of big openings and such (foramen, I think? Crap... memories of developmental anatomy class slowly fading away...) I could research the terms, but I'll wait till I ned to take human Anatomy next year.

Well then, i guess the good news is that i havent been poking him in the brain.

Its good to hear he has healthy ones, especially as he is recovering from MBD at the moment.
