Picture check up from Petstore

I think the stigma surrounds the fact that many people don't properly maintain the glass enclosure and neglect the animal inside.

I think we both can agree that there are plenty of people who don't properly maintain a screen enclosure and neglect the animal inside...would you say then that screen enclosures are bad?

not trying to argue, but as I've said in the last post I made, if the area and the animal dictate the use of glass (partial or full...and a glass door is much nicer then screen.) enclosure, then why fight it?
in fact, it can be sometimes far easyer to use glass. so again, if money is not a factor, then why fight it?

thousands of chameleon keepers around the world have been using glass for far longer then screen cages have been used in the US.
they can't all be wrong.

in fact, I know of plenty of forum members who use glass right now and are having far better results then when they used screen.
glass is not the problem...it is the lack of care by a keeper that is the problem, not the cage.

You are right Warpdrive. The only thing i'd add is screen enclosures are reputated to be easier for newcomers to start with them. This is why i strongly suggest any beginner to start with them. However, if i see Chris Anderson or Kinyonga breed chameleons in glass enclosures, i can't tell them they are wrong! Who am I to tell them that anyway! ;) However, since beginners need precise help and un-nuanced infos, i think screen is a better suggestion for them, in general.

Until a pet store houses chameleons the way members on this forum do, then I'll be happy, if the Cham I see is in glass, it beter be an exoterra or I'm not happy.

I hate to miss a good bashing but I am one of the people you are bashing, so i haven't missed out yet. i have some of my chameleons in glass cages, yes some are exo terra, but some are ones I have made myself. Mine have as much ventilation as the exo terra and my chameleons are healthy and well cared for. Since I use both screen and glass I fell qualified to discuss this issue. Have you ever used anything but screen? How many chameleons have you kept and for how long?

Just so you understand Kinyonga has more chameleon knowledge than you or I will most likely ever have. And I have about 20 chameleons and have kept them for years. Care to tell us about some of your chameleon experience since you are fairly new and most of us don't know you.

You are right Warpdrive. The only thing i'd add is screen enclosures are reputated to be easier for newcomers to start with them.

unless they are harder as I've said on page 3...due to the area they live in and the animal in question.

the only thing that makes screen easyer is the cost to make them and the shipping costs.
everything else depends on the area and the animal.

this forum is littered with posts from people who are using screen cages and have problems with everything from humidity to improper care when using screen.
if it was so easy, all the newbies would have little to no problems when following such "beginer rules" set out by this forum.
sadly, this isn't the case.

why?
because this forum, and only this forum, thinks that screen cages are simpler and easyer then glass for EVERYONE.
and that is far from true, AND NEEDS TO STOP!

are there problems with glass? sure.
are there problems with screen? you bet.
that's why is is not in the persons best interest to listen to such silly "beginer rules" that they should do and should listen to advice that will fit them more personaly.

again, just my 2 coppers. ;)

You know Harry, i don't disagree with you. I just believe that we have different positions when it's time to "educate the beginners", if i can express myself that way. What you seem to prefer is to educate very well the new people and let them make choices by themselves, while i believe in telling them what works for most people and then let them educate themselves and let them add the proper nuances and subtilities if they want.

At the end, my position has bad sides, so does yours. And even if i don't think all the way like you, i believe you are at least as right as i can be, and i respect you for your logical thinking. :)

Morpheon & Harry it is nice to see two guys I like who disagree and yet "play well with others" you are both so respectful it is hard to believe. Good thing I know how nice you both really are.

Good to here a good debate however and pardon me if I'm wrong however the female looks like a sub adult male. It has been a long time since I have worked with this species or seen one in person however the animal in the picture listed as a female has green legs/body which is normally a sign of a male. While females are normally brown/redish/purple (purple for the sub species) and similar to female panthers. Can anyone else confirm?

The picture next to the CIN dvd is a female on page 14.

Kind of crazy they have got a picture of my Avatar on this site!!?!

This is a really good question, and here is what i believed. However, i'm no pro and i did wonder too! So you are not alone!

Here is a quote from this website: http://online-field-guide.com/Furciferverrucosus.htm
"Males can be reliably distinguished from females by characteristics of the dorsal crest; additionally, size dimorphism is pronounced with females being considerably smaller, and males may sometimes exhibit vivid green colouration on the lower flanks, limbs and tail (females are grey or whitish)."

So if you look at the female, she barely has any dorsal crest. Also, the more greyish color and size dismorphism made me believe that it is also a female. However, as you mentionned, the lower age may be the reason why he/she is less bigger than the other male and less colorful. Finally, i didn't see any "bumps" on the beginning of the tail, just like any female Pardalis, which is also another sign i noticed. Then again, i'm no pro and may have just missed the bump. *shrug*

At the end, i'm not sure, but if someone has a good opinion it would be appreciated! :)
