Pickups from the SD Super Show

Finally got around to using the camera so here are some photos of everything we got at last weekend's Reptile Super Show. First off are the panthers. The first are (going to be) a pair I got from Mike at FLChams. The male is super mellow and very heavy. I would think pushing 300 grams, if not over. He is amazingly mellow and I think was the score of the show! Maybe I'm a little partial. The little girl is camera-shy but I got a couple in focus shots of her. The third panther was from Chad at Tiki Tiki Reptiles. He's a fresh import and I'm going to see what I can do with him. He's literally dirty after the import process but seems to be starting a shed. The skin that has come off so far has been brown. Last, as far as chams go, are the R. brevicaudatus eggs Mike sent me home with. Hopefully they hatch, he said I'll love them. :D

I also got a couple froggies. Most importantly, I found a female blue poison frog (Dendrobates azureus)from Lee at InFrogneato to go with my male after his last mate escaped. Finally we also got a juvie ornate Argentine horned frog from Jim at Amazing Blue Reptiles.

The whole weekend was great. Thanks to everyone for making it so!

Random funny memory: On Sunday this small little boy, maybe 4 years old, walked over to me while Mike was completing a sale with his family. He pointed at a cricket in the Oustalet's cage and said, "I know what they do with that. They eat it and then turn it into poooooooo." I almost lost it! :D

Kent that nosy faly was awesome he had a great personality to go with it. I think in 2 more sheds his whites will really show. He is going to make a awesome dad. Chad let me check him out i came close to picking him up, but i was not prepared for another yet. Nice group you got at the show.

Hey Fidel, thanks. That's what I'm hoping for. Even on the first night she was following him around rubbing his back. Haven't found any eggs yet, though.

The show was awesome i got a male panter ambanja x ambilobe from california chameleons he is doing great and just shed!!

Awesome Kent... Sorry I'm late on this thread.

Those pics do absolutely no justice to how huge and awesome that Maro is. That guy is killer.

Your also making me think about the little frogs. The buddy I went with won that setup from the Zoomed booth across from you guys at the show... and the little Madagascar frog they gave him with it is pretty awesome. What do those little Azureus go for? I take it the care and housing is right along the lines of a Brev? I'm gonna do some reading on this tonight.

Do you have any other cool frogs?

hahaha rubbing his back.... I love a good back rub.... I should find a chiropractor.

They do! :D That's part of the courtship. The male will call to get the female in the mood, then he leads her around the tank (she follows while rubbing his back with her front feet), and then he takes her to the hut where they deposit and fertilize the eggs. It's really funny to me because it always seems like she's the one always in the mood and he's trying to get away from her.

Joe, I HIGHLY recommend this species of poison frogs. They are very bold and practically fearless (they won't hop away until you're a few inches from them) which makes them great display animals. Usually unsexed animals can be found for $50-60 and sexed yearlings for $100-140. Just be careful, two adult females together will fight and usually means the death of one.

www.dendroboard.com is a great site/forum.

Tyler... I was going to post that link last night, but for their awesome little tanks they make. I guess they don't advertise them on the site. They had some very impressive displays... I think the next show I see them at I am coming home with one. Considering they have found a reasonable way to ship those things.

They pretty much can't ship the tanks, that's the problem, and I think that's why they're not on his site. Besides being somewhat sensitive to temps, they're crazy heavy, fragile (glass) and can't be flipped over. He (Todd) is planning on a few more shows this year (probably Anaheim, possibly a few others), and he'll be traveling with me to Daytona just to hang out. He does almost all his business locally in the Salt Lake area - his site just went up before the San Diego show (still pretty basic, but will be updated soon I'm sure).

I love the tanks.... Not like those foam insert tanks that everyone sells, his are completely real materials (woods, rocks, live plants) and are biologically balanced, so they're essentially zero maintenance (when dart frogs are used), besides occasional feeding of the frogs. Not sure how they'll work out for people putting leaf chams in there, although he sold a few in San Diego that were leaf cham intended... Leaf chams might produce too much waste (and lost/dead crickets) for the "cleaning crew" bugs to keep up with, but I guess time will tell. I'm getting him to make a road trip to Vegas in a few months to build me a big one (50-100 gallon size?) for a half dozen dart frogs - just looking for the right spot to put it in my house. I think they look better than any saltwater tank I've seen (he does those too, by the way).

I got a little 10 gal tank from todd at the show, we are very happy with it! as of now we have a pair of day geckos living inside it. I will have to get in touch with him here soon as we want another one with a water feature in it.
