Hello I just wanted to ask... I'm still new to chameleons and I've seen alot of people have one of the following listed in their signatures and wanted to know how do you know which type you have( Ambanja, Ambilobe, Nosy Be, Tamatave and Sambava )? or do you just have to wait and see? I didnt ask the breeder...shes on vacation and I was just curious. Is there any way to tell now or just wait until he gets bigger? sorry this is sort of a stupid question and I just was wondering since I didnt know to much about them and couldnt find anything on how to tell except on their coloring and mine hasnt got that yet. I can see a little greenish blue comming in on his cheecks and on top of his head and he has a white/ blue srripe down his sides and has like a red color around his eyes thats all I've seen so far. but the patterns on his sides of the stripes and lines is really dramatic and depending on what hes on like a red flower, brown branch, green plants and I'm just curious. I appologize again if this post is in the wrong section or place. Thanks.

No need to apologize! You can always post pics on the forum here and we can try and help you figure it out. But yes, when they are really young and they are panthers it is often hard to tell because the lack of coloring. There are so many panther Locales. You know he is a panther. Why don't you just wait until your breeder comes back from vacation. She has got to know what she sold you!!

No worries!! All questions are welcome!
You can tell each "locale" by the color as an adult, but when young it is hard to tell, even based on your description, that can change as he develops.. You can ask the breeder once she/he is back or post a picture and let some experts tell you what they think .:)

Okay heres some pics I just took of him. Also I've just noticed that he looks like hes starting to shead...thats another thing I know nothing about and I hate to change subjects so I'll search it here later. but for now hes basically got the greenish color cheecks and top of head and the stripe down his sides are a white/ blue color. But again I was just curious if there was any way in telling now, but I'll just wait and talk to breeder. Plus I love not knowing exactually what he will look like...its like a surprise. Thanks :)

Very hard to tell his locale at this young of an age without the breeder telling you but he looks to be some type of ambilobe. Looks very similar to my 3 month old ambilobe.

Color is not the only way to tell and it certainly isn't the most fool-proof. Some people think my Sambava is a different east coast locale because he has a bit of white striping on his face, but he is 100% Sambava from a known line. The only way to know for sure is to collect the wild animals yourself from madagascar...

i emailed breeder and she wrote me back while on vacation. this is what she said....He likely was hatched in April or early May. His mom was Ambilobe from FL Chams they will be at the reptile show in Tampa,FL at the fairgrounds this Sat & Sun. I'm not sure about his Dad either Ambanja or Ambilobe, I got him at the reptile show. So what does that make him a cross bred? or what is he? I'm just curious its not a need to know right now. :)

If the father was an ambilobe as well that would not make him a cross. If he was ambanja he would be considered a cross. Either way, I'm sure he will grow up to be a great looking cham. :)

That's interesting, people usually don't know what the mothers are in mistaken identity cases! lol Ok, so you might have a cross, or might not, no way to really tell until he grows up. We will be beautiful regardless :D You'll probably start seeing a lot more color at around 6 months, give or take a little.
