Our Meller's mated today!!!

Pardalisgirl (Catherine) came over for a brief visit today and at one point in the visit we showed her our Meller's. I took the female, Megana, off her perch so Catherine could get a good look at her. Hercules was way up high, too high for me to reach without my ladder. I placed Megana back on her perch, and she turned and headed up toward Hercules. Herc saw her coming and stepped forward and began beating his lobes at her. Normally that means "Stay down there, Megana, or go to your own high perch, I want to be up here by myself for a while". Megana didn't back off, but started swaying her body back and forth on her vine. This generally means "stuff it, Herc". So Hercules approached her, down the vine she was on, took both forepaws and grabbed Megana's face. Normally at this point Megana (who is twice his size and twice his weight) beats the snot out of him. But not this time. She stayed calm and kind of flipped over to the other side of the vine and hung there. Hercules seemed to think for a moment, then crawled down on top of her, shimmied down her long body, and went at it. We were dumbfounded. Mostly because we were standing right there a few feet away the whole time, and they knew we were there but obviously didn't mind an audience. And secondly because this is probably the first time they ever mated. We are wondering if showing Megana off to a total stranger elicited a kind of possessive response from Hercules, getting his testosterone going. Anyway. We managed to come to our senses soon enough for my husband to run into the house and get the camera to get this shot. Catherine was in a position to verify that there was actual penetration.

This may not mean much to most of you. But, Meller's don't believe in having casual sex. They have to build a relationship slowly, testing each other, build trust, then bond, then hang out together for awhile, before deciding whether they are interested in each other romantically or not. Sometimes they just decide they don't dig each other at all. There have been a few positive signals here and there, but we were never really sure, until today, where their relationship was headed. These 2 have been cohabitating for a year.

Congrats, Sandy! I am so excited for you! Keep us updated! It has been a long romance and a lot of tense waiting for you, hasn't it? :)

Congrats!!!

I am glad to hear this!!! I hope the rest of the process goes well for you guys. That is definatly one BIG BEAUTIFUL WOMAN:rolleyes:

Thats, awsome! I have 2 mellers, it will be some time before they mate. But this is cool, hope all goes well with this, after that. ;)

Major Mellers is embarassed of his Mom's behavior! :)

That is pretty cool!~ i hope this results in little half-siblings for Major!

Funny - my deremensis would often only mate when I walked in the room. I'd peek in all the time - nothing. I walk in, feed things, clean things - and they'd go at it. Somethign about it, I"m sure. Maybe they think more of us than we know?

I'm in love with them....

I just posted a related post. Not about the mating. That was Sandy's story. But about me really wanting one or two now. I have never seen them in person. Sandy....I can't stop thinking about them. I talked to my hubby about them when I got home. I read the information on Kristina's site and became even more interested in the. Anyway, I'm asking for some advise from Melleri keepers on the other thread I just started. I was so excited about seeing your pair breed that I guess I was repeating my story. At the third telling my husband had to tell me that he's got the message about me loving them. Will your female assume gravid colors fairly rapidly like panthers do? Thanks again for the "show" :)

wow interesting, sorry i don't wanna get to get off topic but do the eggs have embryos when they are laid? Or do they just go through a short diapause? The more I hear about these guys, the more fascinated I am for them. They do seem to be gentile giants, and stink eyes crack me up

Good questions. I have read up on how to prepare the birthing bin. But, if this mating produces eggs, I will be contacting members who have successfully hatched these guys to get the latest recommended details on best incubation methods.

Rescue the one from LLL Reptile I saw today..... He needs a better home than LLL :(

Congratulations, Sandy!

I had been wondering how Herc and Megana were getting along :D

One of the more bizarre aspects of their relationship is the physical abuse. I can't tell you how many times I've seen them slap one another, face grab, shove, etc. You'd think they were pop-culture celebrities the way they carry on! But then they'll sleep with their heads draped over one another, or nose to nose. There are visual barriers in their free range, and there are multiple low, medium, and high perches for them to choose from, so that they don't have to fight over turf. But they do anyway.

The funny thing is, when Megana showed up, with all this roughing-up stuff, Hercules was a little sweetheart and just took it. He didn't seem to know what to make of it and would just quietly retreat. He probably came into the country as a young juvenile and never experienced WC mating. But part of their courtship is for the female to see that the male can stand up to her and give it back. Once he started standing his ground, and even initiated rough stuff, she grew to respect him.

What seems abusive and dysfunctional to us is desirable to them. Or, should I say, to Megana anyway. What a gal!

Eric, for months now I've noticed that Herc will approach Megana when I am in the room. If he had his breeding colors on, and it looked like a possible romantic liaison I would quickly retreat. But in the back of my mind I always wondered if he felt "safer" approaching her when I was there, because she is so big and aggressive. Now I know to stay in the room, and perhaps even move closer to the free range! For whatever reason, he prefers an audience.

Seeing your mellers was great. I have only panthers and veiled so a bigger female than a male looks really strange to me. I often wish it were that way with panthers!! Hope to hear you have little ones on the way. How many eggs do mellers lay on average?

I would love a mellers but am out of space.:(

They can average about 50. If I remember correctly Megana's last clutch was 80 eggs, for Mike of FlChams. He got her when she entered the country gravid and we got her after she recovered from her egg laying.

Update please.....

Hello there wonderful Gesangs......I was wondering what was going on with your Melleri pair after the breeding. Can you tell if she is gravid? Has the male tried to mate again? I know you have been busy with your Veiled female after her surgery. I was thinking of your Melleri this week though and wondered if there were any new developments :) Catherine
