Pardalisgirl (Catherine) came over for a brief visit today and at one point in the visit we showed her our Meller's. I took the female, Megana, off her perch so Catherine could get a good look at her. Hercules was way up high, too high for me to reach without my ladder. I placed Megana back on her perch, and she turned and headed up toward Hercules. Herc saw her coming and stepped forward and began beating his lobes at her. Normally that means "Stay down there, Megana, or go to your own high perch, I want to be up here by myself for a while". Megana didn't back off, but started swaying her body back and forth on her vine. This generally means "stuff it, Herc". So Hercules approached her, down the vine she was on, took both forepaws and grabbed Megana's face. Normally at this point Megana (who is twice his size and twice his weight) beats the snot out of him. But not this time. She stayed calm and kind of flipped over to the other side of the vine and hung there. Hercules seemed to think for a moment, then crawled down on top of her, shimmied down her long body, and went at it. We were dumbfounded. Mostly because we were standing right there a few feet away the whole time, and they knew we were there but obviously didn't mind an audience. And secondly because this is probably the first time they ever mated. We are wondering if showing Megana off to a total stranger elicited a kind of possessive response from Hercules, getting his testosterone going. Anyway. We managed to come to our senses soon enough for my husband to run into the house and get the camera to get this shot. Catherine was in a position to verify that there was actual penetration.
This may not mean much to most of you. But, Meller's don't believe in having casual sex. They have to build a relationship slowly, testing each other, build trust, then bond, then hang out together for awhile, before deciding whether they are interested in each other romantically or not. Sometimes they just decide they don't dig each other at all. There have been a few positive signals here and there, but we were never really sure, until today, where their relationship was headed. These 2 have been cohabitating for a year.
