Our First Chamergency!

Last night around 6pm my power box fuse switched off and refused to switch back on. That meant no power, no heat, no hot water, no fridge, no stove, no anything. I called the electrician, who came out and kindly told me that I need to replace my entire fuse box, and update my ground line. The job is expected to last "for atleast 2 days... and up to 2 weeks." Dependent on how long our power company took to process the paperwork and begin turning off power. Me and my fiance went into panic mode. I have my 5 month old baby Vield, and she has a 3 month old Bearded Dragon. We made make-shift enclosures from 10 gallon fish tanks (we had handy, thank god!) and wrapped everyone up with heat packs. We started the 45 minute travel through the snow/rain, and reached our destinantion at my sister-in-laws house. We set up their vivs in the bedroom and they nestled right in! I was supprised that they were more calm than we were! They are now happily munching on crickets (we brought them in their own heated tank too!) The dogs, cats, and small animals are still hanging out in a dark home ;) hahahaa.

Wow! Yah a power outage is a reptile keepers worst nightmare! I often wonder what I would do under the same circumstances but my hubby has assured me he can get me power with the generator we use when camping and luckily we have a huge trailer that runs on propane so we'd all be at least warm and my chams would have their necessary lighting.

We live in an earthquake fault and have been having quite a few quakes lately. We are always living with the threat of a 'big one' so I have put a contingency plan in place for my lovelies! :)

Good luck with your fuse box repair!

I am looking at a natural gas backup generator for my house, and this story might have convinced me to pull the trigger. If I can only find a reasonable contractor... The install cost 2-3x the generator itself!

Until then, my backup plan is similar to yours :D

That would be a nightmare for a lot of people and for good reason, I'm glad we have one rip roaring fireplace that really puts out he heat, that will keep our baby warm til the heat comes back on.....glad y'all got those babies to a warm place.
