I took my chameleon out today and after a minute or so he opened his mouth up as if he was mad. But no color change and he didn't bulk himself up. What does this mean?
Is it a sign of hunger perhaps?

It is not a sign of hunger.
It is a way they display when they feel threatened or afraid. If your chameleon is young color change may not alway be present. Remember to a young chameleon your nothing but a big scary predator.

No, it's not a problem, he was gaping at you because he was upset/angry,
or scared.
It would be best to not try to handle him untill he has fully adjusted to his new home. Change is a scary thing for chams, and it will take some time before he settles in and figures out that you are not a threat to him.

You could try to hand feed him once a day to get him used to you.
Even if he does not take the food from your hand, he will get used to seeing it, and will eventually overcome his fear.
Just dont force him, let him come to you. ;)

If he already is, then thats a good sign :)

One other thing to keep in mind is reflections. Make sure that he can't see a mirror or reflection in a window. This can cause that type of reaction as well.

Frita is my best bud and I might occasionally get a gape just walking by her. Hand feeding is a great way to bond with our babies without having to touch them. It gives you some interaction and gives them a chance to get use to you while getting a treat. It took me about 4 months to get Frita to hand feed effortlessly. Best wishes.

Thank you all. Made me feel better haha. My Cham name is amigo and it upset me when I saw that reaction because he has Never done that while handling him. He was in my hand when it happened, any suggestions on what to do while they are having their mouth open? It freaked me out a little bit so I basically extended my arm until he closed his mouth
