No idea what's wrong... need urgent help!

Hiya, I have kept my veiled chameleon (Cammy) for 18 months now, he has never had any kind of problem before but he's seriously ill now.

I found him the other day on the floor of his tank a couple of days ago, managed to pick him up to find that he has lost control of his back end. At first i thought he was impacted and so took him to the vets. She gave me some liquid paraffin to give to him twice a day and stuck him with some steriod. This seemed to work well, his colour returned and was moving around looking quite happy even though his back legs and tail were still paralysed, but not he has lost grip in his front arms, his colour is gone and he isn't as interested in food.

He got a lot worse yesterday, his colour has gone and he is really really weak in his front legs. He is still on his paraffin, he has been given steriods on his three trips to the vets, he has just taken his second dose of calcium. I'm sorry to say that he has had to have an enema which I am going to be carrying on, but he still hasn't passed anything.

Around his exit there is a lot of blood, but the vet said it was superficial, I have been cleaning and softening this to keep him open if anything does come out. He is still wanting to eat and drink, but I am having to hold his crickets for him and give him water through a straw because he is too weak to get to his bowl, and I wouldn't want to let him in case he counldn't get his head out.

If it were MBD I would have seen results with the calcium and steriods he has been given, if it were purely an impaction then the liquid paraffin, regular misting, showering and his drinking should have got him to pass something. Nothing's happening and I have no idea what else to do! I am going to ring a load of specialist vets to see whether they can help me anymore, but we've been through my viv set up and general care of him, and though i have recently switched from brown to black crickets, she can not see anything that should have caused such a rapid deterioration in his health.

Any ideas of what could be wrong or suggestions to get him back to his usual self would be appreciated. I am running out of ideas and have been trawling the net for ages looking for something that would explain all of this. I understand that it could be a much bigger underlying problem, but I still need to know what that is so that I can help him. :(

Here..

Cage Info:
Cage Type - Exo-Terra 45x45x60cm
Lighting - Exo-Terra 8.0 15" UVA/B strip light and a 60watt heat lamp.
Temperature - Highest is at 80 lowest 65. Not changed since I have had him.
Humidity - Down to 50% but up to 75% at misting.
Plants - No live plants, lots of fake vines and silk plants, same brand/type I have had in there for over a year.
Location - In my bedroom, do not spend a lot of time in there except at night and when I'm sorting Cammy out.

Chameleon Info:
Your Chameleon - Veiled cham, male, 18 months old.
Feeding - Crickets, tried worms and locusts, but he didn't look as though he could chew the worms properly and he went of his crickets if he has locusts.
Supplements - Gut loading crickets with the same stuff I have had from the start, extra calcium and vit D in the gut loading.
Watering - Mist him 2-3 times a day with hot water. Used to drink from a bowl or from my straw, but now drinking from my straw. A fair amount at a time, with his problems I have taken to showering him, he seems to enjoy it but nothing has passed even with it.
Fecal Description - Dark brown or fairly white. No orange. Nothing for the past few days though.
History - No problems at all before, captive bred, I got him when he was tiiiny. No previous owners, shop I bought him from specialise in reptiles.
Current Problem - I have posted it up there but the basic of it is that he is impacted, paralysed, very weak, on steriods, calcium shots, liquid paraffin and has had an enema to try to relieve the problem. Calcium shots seem to help his grip but still no mobility back. He wants to eat and drink and move around.

NEED HELP!! Off to the vets for the fourth time tomorrow, supposedly D-Day as she put it, I need to know whether there is anything else it could be, the usual remedies for impaction and MBD do not seem to be working. I do not want to have to call it a day for the poor bloke!

that's why i'm looking around for a vet, but if I go to her tomorrow with different options then it's more likely he's got a chance. To be honest though, he can't move, eat or drink on his own, i'd be fine giving him medication and doing all of that, but he needs to do chameleon things.

Your basking temperature is too low for an adult veiled chameleon. Try raising it to something around 95F. This change is not a cure but should help promote better long term health for your veiled chameleon. As mentioned above, a vet experienced with chameleons is highly recommended if available. Vets that cater to exotic animals are also preferred.

He did look like that a couple of days ago, but he has got a lot worse even though the vet did everything that any other vet has done for the other cases of impaction i have read about. I don't think it's MBD because he is not curved and his legs are straight. I have been looking around for a chameleon experienced vet but the most I can find is online help. I have asked the vet about trying new things, she said that if there is anything she can do she is willing to try, and seeing as there are no specialist types close enough for us to get to, that's the best we've got and i'll not turn it down. She is experienced with other reptiles and is very enthusiastic about seeing him get better. I just need ideas about what it could be so that we can find a way to deal with his problems. It's come on so quickly impaction is all i can think it could be but everything we've tried hasn't made a difference.

The steriods were to see if they could help get his legs and tail working, not sure if it was the right thing but he seemed to perk up after.

Maybe suggest an xray then.

That way they can check to see what's wrong with his back end since it's not working.

They can check for broken bones, impaction etc...

He probably perked up cuz of the steroids. Like humans do.

I'll ask about that then.

I don't think he's broken anything cos' I've had a feel, as has this vet of mine, and we can't feel anything broken. She said he seemed a bit lumpy, hence the treatment for impaction. If it is this impaction then I have no idea why it isn't working.
Thanks for helping out there.

Any one got any more suggestions?? Even if you think it daft, he's obviously not responding to the normal stuff so it might be something a little stranger.

I assume this is glass due to the high humidity you can keep it at.

45cmx45cmx60cm when I did a conversion comes out to around 17x17x23 in inches. Is that right?

I believe that is too small for a cham that is 18 months old.

I have a 6 month old male veiled cham that I used to keep in an 18x18x36 screened cage and he would keep climbing the top or reaching for it but when I moved him to a 24x24x48 screened cage he stopped.

Lighting - Exo-Terra 8.0 15" UVA/B strip light and a 60watt heat lamp.

Do you change the fluorescent bulb every 6 months?

Reptisun 5.0 linear fluorescent is highly recommended.

Temperature - Highest is at 80 lowest 65. Not changed since I have had him.

I agree with Brad. The basking spot should be around 90F to 95F. It helps them digest food too.

Humidity - Down to 50% but up to 75% at misting.

Great humidity although they can live with 40-70%.

Plants - No live plants, lots of fake vines and silk plants, same brand/type I have had in there for over a year.

I've always used live plants so I can't really comment on the fake ones.

Chameleon Info:
Feeding - Crickets, tried worms and locusts, but he didn't look as though he could chew the worms properly and he went of his crickets if he has locusts.

You can also try gutloading roaches, feeding him silkworms etc..

Supplements - Gut loading crickets with the same stuff I have had from the start, extra calcium and vit D in the gut loading.

Do you dust the crickets with vitamins, minerals phosphorus free? Do you have a supplement schedule? What brands do you use?

The gutload only contains calcium and vit D?

Do you offer fresh veggies to the crix?

I use the gutload at cricketfood.com

Watering - Mist him 2-3 times a day with hot water. Used to drink from a bowl or from my straw, but now drinking from my straw. A fair amount at a time, with his problems I have taken to showering him, he seems to enjoy it but nothing has passed even with it.

Bowls are a bad idea, like waterfalls are.

Ok, I hope others chime in and give some ideas as well. :D
