Hiya, I have kept my veiled chameleon (Cammy) for 18 months now, he has never had any kind of problem before but he's seriously ill now.
I found him the other day on the floor of his tank a couple of days ago, managed to pick him up to find that he has lost control of his back end. At first i thought he was impacted and so took him to the vets. She gave me some liquid paraffin to give to him twice a day and stuck him with some steriod. This seemed to work well, his colour returned and was moving around looking quite happy even though his back legs and tail were still paralysed, but not he has lost grip in his front arms, his colour is gone and he isn't as interested in food.
He got a lot worse yesterday, his colour has gone and he is really really weak in his front legs. He is still on his paraffin, he has been given steriods on his three trips to the vets, he has just taken his second dose of calcium. I'm sorry to say that he has had to have an enema which I am going to be carrying on, but he still hasn't passed anything.
Around his exit there is a lot of blood, but the vet said it was superficial, I have been cleaning and softening this to keep him open if anything does come out. He is still wanting to eat and drink, but I am having to hold his crickets for him and give him water through a straw because he is too weak to get to his bowl, and I wouldn't want to let him in case he counldn't get his head out.
If it were MBD I would have seen results with the calcium and steriods he has been given, if it were purely an impaction then the liquid paraffin, regular misting, showering and his drinking should have got him to pass something. Nothing's happening and I have no idea what else to do! I am going to ring a load of specialist vets to see whether they can help me anymore, but we've been through my viv set up and general care of him, and though i have recently switched from brown to black crickets, she can not see anything that should have caused such a rapid deterioration in his health.
Any ideas of what could be wrong or suggestions to get him back to his usual self would be appreciated. I am running out of ideas and have been trawling the net for ages looking for something that would explain all of this. I understand that it could be a much bigger underlying problem, but I still need to know what that is so that I can help him.
