My veiled is sick.

I bought a male veiled chameleon from a local pet store. I've had experience with other lizards, like bearded dragons and the like, and I decided to give a chameleon a try. I did it on a whim, and the pet store employee pretty much sold him to me without even saying anything.

That's fine. I did research myself.

First the shop guy told me to use a glass tank. I researched and this was wrong. I got a netted cage, digital thermometers for heat and humidity, a 5.0 UV linear bulb (which the guy didn't even make mention of), a 75 watt heat lamp placed 6 inches from his basking area, calcium powder to coat feeders, Vit A oil to coat feeders, D3 coating for use two times a week, etc. I mist his cage three times a day, and also drip ice cubes onto the leaves of the plant in the corner while I am at school.

However, if I would have known what a chameleon was supposed to look like, I would not have purchased this one. In fact, the chameleon was housed with another chameleon, and at the time I didn't notice how sickly they looked. First of all, they were housed in a GLASS TANK with nothing to crawl on, just some fake flower plant thing that wasn't even climbable. They were both very drab. Just a darkish brown/gray color. The pet shop owner actually told me to only feed the chameleon TWO CRICKETS three times a week!!:mad:

I haven't had him more than four days and he's been shy/not very active whatsoever. He won't do anything but hide if any of us are in the room. And at first when he was fine with handling when I took him out of the cage to clean it. Well, I woke up this morning and found one of his eyes closed, and he was shaking. I know this was not me. This was the pet store. I can't even take him out of the cage to inspect him, or try to see if anything else is going on because he'll hiss and try to bite me.

I'm very mad. I spent quite a bit of money on this little guy to get his place absolutely perfect, and that pet store sold me a sick veiled. He's about 6 months, but the guy didn't really even know how old he was. He ate 6 crickets yesterday, and his fecal matter seems normal white/brown so he's hydrated, but obviously there's something else going on. Limbs appear good, no sign of MBD.

I'm thinking of calling that pet store and giving them an earful. In the meantime, suggestions? Can we start by how the heck I can get him out of the cage without a bleeding finger?

I suggest getting ahold of ChamElisa. Send her a PM or a link to this thread. She is amazing with sickly critters.. and YES, call the Pet store and tell them that they are irresponsible and their employees and owner should be more aware of what the animals they carry need. They wont care, but at least it will ruin someones day.

Hello and welcome to the forums. Hate to hear that your little guy's not doing well. Where do you live? Do you have a vet that knows chameleons? Any time I buy a new animal I take it in for a check up and it sounds like he needs one. Can you post a few pictures of him? If you will fill in the how to ask for help below the members here will try to help but we are not vets. Also read the Raising Kitty blog.....very helpful info there. Jann

Ok let's talk about where you go from here. First you need to schedule a vet visit, NOW. Second to get him out of the cage put on a pait of soft leather gloves. There is a help function at the top of the column. Fill that form out, and yes I know it is long, I have had to fill it out also. Right now worry about his getting enough water. The vet will advise what to do about his food.

Go back to the pet store and explain, as nicely as you can, that the cham is sick and you are taking him to the vet which will cost more than the cham did so you would like your money back. If it is a reptuable store they will work with you. If it happens to be Petco they have an adoption program where the manager can give the animal to you.

Post a picture of the chameleon and the enclosure if you can. We have some great people on this forum who will help you but you are going to have to see a vet to get a parasite check and determine what else might be at issue with the little guy. After al this you will hoefully have a healthy cham for years.

Keep in touch. Good luck

Do you know your temps? 75 watts 6" away can be pretty hot, and I wouldn't want it much more than low 90's. He could easily eat 10+ crickets daily at this age, and a variety would not hurt either-try Superworms, Silkworms, Roaches, etc. Back your D3 useage to twice monthly, and Vit A to minimum depending on what multivite you use-others could advise you on Vit A use. Veileds can be drab at 6 months-so with proper care he could turn around and amaze you!

I live in Lenexa, Kansas. I can look up a herp vet when I'm done with class, since I'm at school right now, but I'm sure there is one since this is a huge city. I can get pictures later on this evening, too. When he sees me, he'll open that eye and it will appear fine. No irritation or anything, but then he'll close it again. He still climbs around and seems fine, not jittery, but he'll shiver and his color is just freaking me out. That and he was so skinny when i first purchased him, obviously from being underfed.

I'll get him a checkup and then march right down to the pet shop and demand they pay his vet bill since they sold me a sick chameleon, either that or give me my $85 that I paid for him. This is a terrible first experience.

Julirs, basking temp is actually only 85-93 max. I've tried to feed him wax worms and silk worms, and he kind of just looks at them without interest. He appears only interested in crickets, and that's probably because that was all they fed him. He's also so shy that when I go to put food into his cage he runs off and hides for hours. As long as I'm present, he won't do anything, so I can't even see whether or not he's okay. This is very frustrating.

Wow. I live like a block away from that guy! Thanks!

jann, my main issue is I can't even get him out of his cage right now without him trying to bite me. He's seriously pissed off, and I'm too afraid to stick my hand close to him after his several attempts to snap at my fingers. How could I get him out?

I too had an expirence with this, I was sold a cham with a URI(i didnt know it had one)...at least the store sold me the right supplies.

2 days after i had him i found him blowing bubles out of his mouth. I took him to the vet and he was perscribed baytril, the vet gave him one shot and gave me the rest of the meds to administer, my guy died later that day...

I went to the store and demanded something, money back vet bills, even another cham. They said absolutly not, because i did not contact them about the illness before taking my guy to a vet!

I dont know what the policies are at your pet store but call them and see what they say BEFORE you take him to the vet so you dont wind up in the same situation i was.

My 2 veileds are nice and friendly but I read on hear about ALLOT of veileds that are not. If you've only had him a few days.......it also takes awhile for them to settle in and then some veileds are never friendly at all. Jann

I'm not going to give him treatment from the vet, but first just a checkup without anything. That way they can tell me exactly what's wrong with him so I have proof when going down to the pet store.

So jann, should i just grab him and if he bites me then he does?

as a quick mention, he was tolerant when i first bought him, and it has just been today that he's been cranky when i tried to see what was wrong. before then he didn't seem to mind being held.

How big is he? You may need to use gloves as suggested or just take his cage to the vet and let the vet get him out.

Oh, another note, I already called the pet store and told them my veiled was sick, so they are already aware before I take him to the vet. The owner said to bring him in and he will see, but I'll get a checkup today before going over there so I have some paperwork showing exactly what he has.

quite large. about two feet wide and 4.0 feet high. he has quite a bit of room since I figured he was going to grow a little more.
