I'm sorry to give this update. Sniffle, sniffle. My rescued melleri, Sampson, will soon be passing away. I don't understand what happened. He was doing well for awhile, but then he lost all his weight and i have been gone for a few days, but had someone come in and take care of everyone, but when i got home today i noticed his coloring had completely changed. When i left he was a nice green but today he started with just his tail yellow, but now his entire body has taken on the yellow and black color. He drank like crazy today but i could tell something was wrong. Do any of the melleri people have any ideas as to why they sudden change and downhill spiral? I knew it was a long shot when i got him but then he seemed to do so good in the beginning. I'm really upset, i thought he was going to make it.

I am really sorry.

I have a rescued Melleri too. I know you do everything you can and even then, they sometimes have been through so much, they just dont make it. As you know they get called the 90 day chameleon, and so I will not get my hopes up until I reach the November, that is when I will reach day 90.
Again, I am sorry for what you are going through, but know you gave that Melleri a chance, and that is worth something.

Sorry to hear this Debby, I know how excited you were about him. This part is always tough.

Condolences,
Joe

I am no expert. I am still under my 90 days with Lenny.

What kind of things changed when he started to go down hill? What kind of enclosure? How was he/she eating? What kind of parasites did he/she have? How were you treating the parasites?

This info could help some of us with Melleri identify issues early on.

I am sorry to hear things are not working out :(

Debbie, I am so sorry, I know he was a trooper. WCs can truly be a veterinary grab-bag of troubles.

The sudden weight loss could be so many things. I know you had his fecal checked and it was clean, but dropping weight almost overnight makes me think of coccidia. If he was drinking like crazy, he was dehydrated. When some melleri are ill, they need showers daily. Was the petsitter showering him, too?

The sudden "draining" of color could be directly proportional to internal hemorrhaging from wayward microfilaria. The pattern sounds too familiar. They seem to be fine, then one day, they suddenly wash out of color in mere hours and die. The sudden weight loss doesn't match with that, though...

Is the color a washy yellow and is the black "dusted" on the crests and skeletal points of the body? Or is it bold black and yellow striped? Are any stripes brown or rust colored?

Are you going to have a necropsy done? Maybe he had a perforated bowel, and that was causing the weight loss?

I'm sorry for your loss.:(

I'm sorry to hear this, Debbie. You really tried your best with him.

I hope you'll at least be able to find out what's going on.
