Multiple chams per cage?

Good day all, i need the experts recommendation on this

I am getting Jackson's soon and cut out on space.

Can i put 2 female jackson's per inclosure in a 38 gallon cage? They small species in 38 gallon which is big for them and both will be female so i dont see an issue with it?

I know the general rule is one cham per inclosure but.........

I wouldnt try this with my pardalis or calyptratus but hey jacksonis seem smaller and less agressive, females for that matter

I have not found Jackson's to be any less aggressive to each other than veileds or panthers are.
With all 3 people have had varying levels of success housing females together, I have done it for short periods of time without issues.
My biggest concern would be if you breed either or both of them.
I don't know how it would effect/stress them to live together while pregnant.

yes that my concern too, thay will be bred and could stress.

Depends on various factors:
-age of the animals
-visual barriers/structure/size of the cage
-gender constellation
-individual character
-pregnant females
etc

I prefer the individual housing of every specimen if there's enough space.

I agree with Ben. I know of a guy that keeps a trio of bradypodion per enclosure. Not sure how big the enclosure though. And they do quite fine.

My concern would be when they are pregnant and if they will actualy tolerate eachother anyway.

If you try. . .keep the cage heavily planted.
And make sure they are BOTH getting their fare shair of food and seperate them when the dropping time comes near.

A 38 gallon is way too small to provide each cham with enough space to thermoregulate, drink, hide, hunt, bask without directly competing with the other one. There is stress on the aggressor who is always having to dominate the lesser, and the lesser cham will always be on the defensive. Aggression isn't always physical fighting or attack. The more insidious stress has more to do with one dominant animal taking over the best basking spot, getting the better feeders, using the best drinking spot, the best microclimates at the right times of day, and the fact that neither cham will be able to get away from the other if they do happen to squabble. FWIW, I would not put a single female jax in a 38 gallon either. Just not enough living space IMHO.

Ok but chameleonneeds we will set this up soon when they come.

Look they will be gravid and then ill see if they can be housed together, other than that space is a problem cause i already got 8 chams and buying another 12

Why do you say you would not house even a single one in a 39g. The cage is 72 x 40 x 40. And he is talking about the merumontanus specie not xantholophus. Seems like more than enough space to me.

If space is an issue you shouldn't be getting 12 more chams.JMO..Are you sure you can put them where they won't see each other, have the right side cages, and stuff. I'm having those kind of issues myself and just had to move some chams into another room. Because of my issues we're getting out of leopard geckos completely so that my chams can migrate into the gecko room. lol.

Maybe I'm confused about the cage size? Are your measurements in inches or centimeters? The 38 gallon I am thinking about isn't 72"x40"x40". A 120 gallon Reptarium isn't even that large. Maybe just a misunderstanding.

Ok im getting more chams cause a friend of mine is importing a large amount of species not on the market here in South Africa.

Im getting werneri, jacksoni merumontanum, deremensis.

So im buying them all to breed cause other breeders have no clue on how to breed and kill everything.

This is a good opportunity to get new species into South Africa.
The only other way to get species is to get one of our locales to drive up to Tanzania or Malawi or i would have to go up into Africa on my own.

So im buying alot now to breed them, its extremely difficult getting permits here as our local Bradypodions are so protected
