Moved into the Townhouse.

Chameleon Enthusiast
Finally moved, the townhouse is way better than the apartment I was in. Friendly community with very little crime, huge nature park nearby, a good view of downtown nearby, grocery stores nearby, and the place stays much cooler than the apartment. However, Chandler is kinda grumpy after the move lol.

View from the front door.

And one grumpy Chandler.

It's a new environment, typically takes them some time to adjust. I once had to replace the front screen door to one of my cages and you would have thought I punched my chameleon he was so mad. Took him a week or two to mellow out. I do see that the cage is in a living room, or at least it looks like it. Is there any other place it could go? Placing the cage in a high traffic area with a lot going on (TV's, gatherings, etc) can be pretty stressful to him.

He was actually kept in my bedroom before and actually since my girlfriend and I work different shifts usually only one of us is home. My girlfriend works mornings and I work evenings. That and I couldn't get his cage up the stairs to the second floor, it was just a little bit too big.

If you watch TV late at night you can put a cover around the sides to keep it dark for Chandler.
Congrats on your move. Once he's sure he's the biggest cham in the new neighborhood he'll settle in just fine.

Congrats on the new Pad! (y)(y)(y)
My house is open concept and my Cham is in the “big blob” which is our den, dining and kitchen...I’ve been putting a cover over Harry’s enclosure b/c it’s all I’ve been able to do, TV, noise and all...he passes out (I’ve peaked and checked a couple times) good to know this is okay ...I’m always learning something from you guys ;)

As I'm preparing for my new cham setup, I was also wondering about living around a cham...so I'm planning on putting my setup in my bedroom in a low traffic area. If I have a small lamp on at night while I'm reading in bed, would that be something that might potentially wake/disturb a veiled cham? Should I try to time things or move things around to make sure it's as dark as possible while he's sleeping? I also wonder about summer time when the light shines through my windows 16-18 hours a day and want to make sure my cham is getting his beauty sleep, haha! Maybe I'm over thinking this?

As long as their cage is dark, there shouldn't be an issue. If the lamp is lighting up the cage, then you may want to consider putting something to block the light a little, otherwise it may become grumpy (and Veileds already have more of a temper, than say Panthers). During the summer, you would definitely want to figure something out...that's not enough darkness for them and will probably stress them.

Great to know! It's an easy fix to get some light blocking curtains for my windows. So glad I asked and thank you!!

Haha, I will definitely be posting pics and I'm considering starting a blog for my process and thoughts on all of this. I love the forums for learning about specific questions, but the blogs have really helped me learn the PROCESS of how people got into this hobby and how they learned, and how they maintain, etc. I just find it all so helpful and if my process and story helps someone else, great! If not, it at least helps me keep track of what the heck I'm doing along the way so I don't forget, haha. So many details, but I love it all!

Chams get a rep for being "oh so advanced" and I get that, and find it somewhat reasonable, but at the same time, I really think this is a great fit for me as a first reptile.

They're not the easiest for sure, and they're absolutely NOT one you can just dive into without doing extensive research and planning (see bearded dragons). But you're doing the right thing by gathering all the information you can, tips, setup suggestions etc. I had a VERY hard time when I got my first one with being patient and waiting a few weeks. I wanted to get him THEN AND THERE. But you just can't do that with chameleons :) Welcome to the obsession!

For summer, I would just keep the lights on for the natural daylight schedule. Have them turn off a little before the sun goes down and turn on a little after the sun comes up. This way you get a natural sunrise/sunset.

@amfire125 I honestly was the same as you, I got a veiled chameleon as my first reptile. Honestly, they're only difficult because they require quite a lot of knowledge and most people buy them because they look cool, not realizing the care they need to keep healthy.

I hate to trash talk anyone, but I did go buy a used enclosure from someone the other day who was also selling / giving away two chams that were in terrible shape... I'm brand new to this and I could tell she was doing several major things very wrong. I don't want to give details, but it was bad! :(

As far as light from the windows goes I keep the shades drawn in the cham room and have a curtain that I can close in front of the cages if I'm working in there at night. I'm very protective of my girls. My avatar is in the living room which is a medium traffic area. I open and close the blinds in time with his lights and cover the front of his cage if I watch TV late, which is rare. It's not like they don't get moon and star light in the wild. The light that creeps in around a cover shouldn't be an issue.
Clean the heck out of that used enclosure. Scrub it with soap and warm water and then bleach it with a 1:20 bleach solution at the very least. Rinse it very well and let it dry in bright sunlight.

Super helpful as always! Thanks! I already scrubbed the cage pretty good with soap and water for a first cleaning, but I definitely want to use bleach and disinfect the whole thing like you suggest. Thanks again
